Default Electronic chip detectors

In aircraft, we use electronic chip detectors that magnetically attract chips to a couple of small rods (like sticking out of the crankcase oil change plug into the sump), where they set off a light when chips build up to a sufficient point. Does anyone know of that system for cars? It seems like it would be quite useful in early Boxsters and 996s.

That's exactly how the IMS Guardian works.

Thanks for the info everyone, as you can see I haven't owned a Boxster (11 911s) so I haven't read extensively on the Boxster forums. My son is considering one so we are looking into the issue now. I figured it was out there because of my experience with helicopters.

Jay:
Did you put a Guardian in your 2004 Boxster?

I was wondering if your chip detector experience was on the "beeping/flashing" end or on the "time to get greasy" end..... Anyway, what year car are you looking at - some seem to be worse than others. Best of luck with whatever you guys decide!

The Guardian was developed by an ex Helo guy.

Cobra Maintenance detachment commander and test pilot.

My son is looking at a 2004 Boxster S Spyder. It's in great condition, but not a good year for IMS survivability.

#1, thank you for your service! I am a pilot, an EAA member and working on my a&p(for a long time) among other things. Yeah somewhere in or around 2001 was the last year for the double-row bearing so I would figure the replacement cost in on purchase price.

You can never be sure until the transmission is off, could be a replacement engine or a swap.

Transition years were more like 2000 and 2005.
