Alright, now I'm getting ready to put this mess back together. I ebayed a trans for 1,200 - I'll service it and see how she runs. I will report if drive flanges from a 2.7 tip fit a 3.2 tip also, or i'll keensert those 10mm holes.
So - the IMS hype is for real? I have a dual-row 6204dua17 that appears new at 105k miles. I hate to just put it all back together, but why not? It seems if I did just the $200 Pelican replacement IMS I could have soemthing to tell people if I decide to sell it in a few years, but I really see no reason to change a good bearing. Not like there is an A.D. on it or anything......

If you have a somewhat new, replacement double row ,my impression is that you are highly unlikely to have an IMSB problem in the near future. If the RMS is not leaking - leave it. Now is the time to replace the AOS if required.

Well, it looks great, and has almost no play, feels smooth - but I have 0 history on this car. If I leave it alone and it goes for another 100k then I am smart, but if it fails I suppose I would be an idiot. No real middle ground here. Oil filter was clean, engine has no internal sludge.
Magnetic drain plug and run it? Replace it? Heads or tails time I suppose.

FWIW, the drive flanges on a boxster "s" have 10mm bolt holes whereas the 2.7 boxster has 8mm holes, but that seems to be the only difference. The flanges interchanged rather easily, so good to go on the trans.....

I'm no where in your league however I have dropped the transmission on a 2000 'S', replaced clutch, RMS, IMS and while I was in there the AOS. There is one other item, the oil filler tube that can be a pain. They like to leak enough to have a small drip. Doesn't hurt anything, but if you don't like seeing oil on the garage floor it is worth taking care of while you have everything out. I got a new hose and used some good clamps. It is a PITA to fix from the top so I did it while the transmission was out.

Just a quick update - runs great. Engine is super quiet and smooth, no leaks. These things have the quietest muffler on any sports car ever or what?

Exhaust is rather muted. Since I can spend hours a day in my car I like that. The intake noise can be rather substantial though under hard and high RPM acceleration.
