Default Did Boxster ever have dual row IMS?

Just occurred to me the other day. Most 996 owners are aware that the 1999 Porsche 911 came with the dual row IMS which suffered a failure rate below 1%. Then in MY 2000 some penny pinching genius decided that Porsche could save X amount of $$ if they changed to an inferior single row bearing.(failure rate 8%) But I've never heard of early Boxsters being equipped with dual row bearings at any time.

Boxsters share the same general dual row production spread that the 996's do. For cars with original engines... up to 1999, they'll be dual row. 2000 & 2001 are transition years where you could have either, and 2002 and up would be only single row.
My 2000 986S is a dual row, but I know two 2001 owners that are also dual row, where the majority of that model year are single row.

That makes sense. Would love to know the logic behind Porsche abandoning the dual row in favor of the single row.

Less friction and less heat. Lower noise levels. Less mass to spin up or slow down. The decision may not have been driven by some penny pinching accountant.

I can wrap my head around friction and heat, but noise and inertia?
How so?

Rolling element bearings are inherently noisy. The more races/***** the noisier.

Some of the bearing is pressed on the IMS and spins with it. Thus the larger dual row bearing being heavier represents more mass that has to be accelerated when one is pushing down on the gas pedal or slowed down when one is off the gas pedal. Granted it is not lots more mass.

Neil's how to's are always well done. He presents in a clear concise manner and is always easy to follow. And yes, his elocution is excellent.

Yes, He has a great series on the Boxster/M06 .Wish the Mods would move this link somewhere the noobs would find it. These video links would be a great way to attract new Boxster/996 owners to the sit - hint !
It could help the new owner zoom up the learning curve and understand the more advanced content here.

I signed up for this site about a month ago, to learn about the cars, things to look for, what gets fatigued, things like that.

I feel like I'm pretty well versed and will be taking ownership of a 1999 Boxster in a couple weeks.

Always finding new thins to read here.
Been perusing the Boxster vids a lot as well.

Ryan - thank you.
When noobs ask basic questions that Search or Google would have answered easily, they are often ignored ,or worse. Those that have made a modest effort to educate themselves about their issues get a great welcome. The only exception is those guys who sign up with a female name and then the response is huge :-) .That is either noble or pathetic - I am unsure which :-)

lol I get that "search noob" or "LMGTFY" mentality.

I'm new to Porsche, not auto forums.
