early 986 vs later 986 S
Looking at Boxsters and found some decent ones for right around 10k.
It seems like i can get a 01 S with mileage in the low 100k range or a low mileage 98 with 40 to 60k on it.
Obviously, there are a lot of reasons to like the S and my thought is if the 100k one has been well taken care or and hasn't had some of the common issues Boxster's have, then it should be ok. I'll still enjoy a base Boxster too, neither model is going to be fast - just looking for a cruiser that can attack on and off ramps with reckless abandon! ;-)
I am only looking at private party cars that have a solid service history and of course will be doing a PPI.
Thoughts?

Some of the '98's and early '99's had their motors re-sleeved by Porsche and a bunch of these later failed.
For that reason and the meaningful updates that occured in 2000, I'd go with a 2000 or later (even if it meant more miles).

thanks guys!
That's kind of what I was thinking too..
The 98 I found did have a new factory motor put in 12k miles ago back in 2007 and the oil has been changed every year since with Mobil 1. A new clutch was put in as well.

No spec Boxster for me because the car counts are way too low and the cars are too slow for me.
I did think about putting a 3.4 in one and going NASA GTS3 with it.
I ended up getting an 01 S with 105k - needed to be fully serviced, but no I know everything is fresh and ready... Can't wait to start driving it!
thanks for all the advice and comments!!

Three Wheelin'
I got the impression somewhere that a Boxster with something other 100 k miles... is better than a low mileage Boxster. It makes me think, and I'm crossing my fingers while typing this, that if it had had a IMS failure, etc it would have happened with lower mileage. Anyone see my theory???

Careful with the PPI, they are only as good as the mechanic performing the service and are often not done with the same acuity a buyer would use themselves. My car had 3000 on it, was a year old and I still found things the PPI guy never saw. Given the way the IMS wears and eventually fails, I would plan on replacing it in every car around 100K and deploy that fact in negotiation. A new or replacement engine is big cash, an ims job is good insurance and far cheaper.
