Default Mating trans and motor

Have searched, read the workshop manuals, etc. Having difficulty mating up the motor and trans in his 99 986, specifically the splined shaft in the trans to the clutch. Any tips or tricks? Friend and I spent a lot of time and effort and couldn't make it happen. Should we use a hammer to nudge them together? How best to line up the splines?

Thank you.

This was a double post and addressed in the 996 forum. Did you get the motor and trans together BTW?

No trick I just put mine back balanced on a floor jack. Like any clutch if you didn't use an alignment tool to line up the disk in the pressure plate that's the first thing to try. As you put it into place you can rotate the output flanges (both since it's not limited slip) to line up the splines. Swearing uncontrollably for 30 seconds is usually involved too.

Good luck.

ditto RK. do NOT force things; you will damage the clutch disk.

pull the clutch back off, re-align w/ clutch centering tool & try again. when you get it right, it will slide right in (with some wiggling of course).

Did re-pull and realign the clutch but at this point it can't hurt to try that again.

@Randy, we went over your 30 second allocation for swearing!

Also, make sure the transmission is in gear (not in neutral) when rotating the flanges. You can spin those all day long with no effect if it's in neutral.
