Default "Limp" mode after MAF sensor/engine clean?

My brother and I cleaned is MAF sensor in is 2000 S and afterwards did some light engine cleaning. No High pressure stuff.

After we did it, the car would start but RPM would be hard pressed to get to 2k. We attributed this to moisture and gave it another 6 hours and it is still the same. After MAF sensor replacement we were not pulling that code anymore abd no CEL. But we are getting an idle speed code.

Any ideas as to what we managed to screw up?

Try reset by unhooking the battery for a minute. I had a similar cel after cleaning the maf on a 99 996. It ran normally after an ecm reset.

I believe the easy test for a MAF sensor is to disconnect it then start the car. If it runs better without it then you have a damaged MAF. It will trip a CEL but it won,t damage anything else.Try it because the inability to rev is one indication of a bad MAF. If it is then you need a scaner to confirm. Aftermarket MAFs are available for much less than from Porsche.

Thanks. We'll give this a try. We have a normal OBD scanner and we were not pulling a MAF code AFTER we cleaned it (we were before) but maybe we are doing something wrong. In any case, it might pay to hunt down a new sensor as you recommened just to eliminate that possibility.

I had a MAF that read no codes but the thing wouldn't idle or rev for anything. I put a new MAF from Pelican parts ($215 for a pre 2000) and it ran great. just my 2cents

Thanks guys for all your input. It turns out that this was indeed the problem and I guess "cleaning" the thing doesn't always fix a bad one!

How did you determine ? Did you unhook as they said or did you simply replace it with a new unit ?
