Default P1341 error today- First check engine light in 3 years!

I read the code and it said "Manufacturer control ignition system or misfire" I cleared the code with an OBD II reader then later the same day it came back (30 miles or so of driving) I found some info on the 996 and I am guessing it is the same thing but I have seen P1341 come up with some different explanations. Does anyone have any info on this code for a Boxster S specific error? 85k on the car, spark plugs replaced at 60k.

1st guess would be to check for bad/cracked coil packs, that's what caused my misfires, I can't find my notes but the error number sounds familiar

My 2nd hand info is the VarioCam actuator on that bank bad. Now could be a connector or the wiring is mimicing a bad actuator so those possible causes need to be eliminated.

Nothing like replacing an actuator when the act of disconnecting and connecting the connector of the old one fixed the problem by removing some surface corrosion from the wiring connector contacts (pins/sockets).

Not sure if you can see this but if you can this link might provide you with some help:

Macster That link was great! This quote:
"Slight stutter while pressing on the accelerator in 2nd gear turn (regular, not agressive)

CIL goes on."

I thought my traction control was acting up because when I was in 2nd gear and punched it to get through an intersection while turning I felt the car cut throttle. I guess I had a misfire then. CIL right after that!

I will read up on that some more.

That's impossible for me to say with any confidence.

While the light might be simply indicating some connection problem that while it causes the engine to act up a bit there's no risk to the engine.

OTOH the problem might be the early phase of a more serious mechanical problem with the actuator that if the engine continues to be used could progress and result in engine damage.

I'd advise you to consult with a qualified technician and see what is recommended.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Well I went to the qualified Porsche Tech over lunch today. Bank 1 Actuator is not working. it would not respond to the tester and it does not adjust when the engine is above 2700 like bank two.

Ok. Can he id the cause of this behavior?

I see someone else has posted some good details on trouble-shooting. I can't provide any better info than that and no need to repeat it.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Not sure about that. The "angle" would go from 0 to 23+ deg on Bank 2 but it would stay put around zero on Bank 1. I will follow that plan, thanks guys!

Great stuff MB 911 !

Apparently the timing advance for one camshaft not working. When the advance signal given the camshaft on the working side of the engine advances the 23 or so degrees it should while the camshaft on the other side doesn't advance.

The task then becomes one of seeing if the wiring or the actuator at fault.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I cleared the code and drove home the entire way keeping the car under 2700 rpm. No light if I drive like a grandma. I will investigate this weekend if I get the other projects finished.

The code came back in the morning shortly after a cold start. I spent the day driving "normal". I did not keep it below 2700 rpm but I also did not bounce off the rev limiter or do anything crazy. The light went away. I will continue to drive it "normal" for a few days then resume driving like a lunatic and see if it comes back. I will trace the connection as well.

Well the light is still off. I have been taking it easy but I am sure I have gone above 2700 rpm. I will continue to monitor.
