Default Location of Ignition Switch - FIXED

Guys,

My wife's Boxster recently started having problems with the ignition switch. I did a search here on RL and purchased a replacement switch and it arrived today in the mail. I did my best to fit my big old head under the dash, but I did not see the switch in question. Can anyone give me some general direction as to the location of the switch?

Thanks, Dave

Dave:

It's a little hard to see at first because the air duct is a little in the way, but it's located directly behind where you insert the ignition key (i.e., further towards the front of the car than the key).

Go to Mike Focke's website, and you will see a diagram of exactly where it is located, along with a procedure guide for replacing it.

Here is the link: http://mike.focke.googlepages.com/ig...tchreplacement

If the problem was the key didn't "feel" like it was turning the lock, or the lock could be turned off and the lights remained on and the car is pre-2002 replacing the electrical part of the ignition switch won't fix the problem.
Replace the ignition switch assembly, which comes with an updated electrical switch.
You keep the original key cylinder and keys.

Part number is 996 347 017 07

hmmmm the symptoms you describe, key feeling like it didn't want to turn off, lights not turning off, and more.. getting balky at inserting and removing the key, strange beeps from the alarm, were all present in my car last fall. ALL symptoms were cured by replacing the electrical portion, only, of the switch. From several other boxster boards, this seems to be the general concensus as to the "fix" for any number of problems.. replacing the electrical only in the ignition switch. Since the cost of the whole assembly is substantially higher than just the switch part, you might want to experiment with replacing that first, before investing in the whole shebang.

It may well fix it (for a while), and then it's fine for diy people.

Repair shops have to offer a warranty with all work, we only install the complete lock assembly with the Porsche updated (to cure all the noted problems) supplied part.

Same here, at our shop we replace the entire assembly. I had a customer that had a repair shop replace the electrical portion of his, came to us 4 months later and needed the entire assembly.

Guys,

I just replaced the electrical switch and the issue appears to be resolved. Thanks to all for the help.

Anybody know how to get the key slot assembly out of the pot metal assembly? I have the whole contraption out of the car but can't get the key cylinder out of the assembly.

insert a thick paper clip into the hole next to the key opening, it just falls out.
be sure not to remove it until you install it in the new swich assembly.

kind regards,
halo
