Smile Built in Finland

Hello,

Another newbie question...

How many (% wise or year) Boxsters are made in Finland, and should I care?

Thanks,

Greg

When I bought my 01 I was told that all "regular" Boxsters were built in Finland, and all Boxster S cars were built in Stuttgart along with Boxsters for shipment to other places than the US. If your VIN # has a U before the last 6 gigits, it was built in Finland! Independent surveys actually rated the Finnish 986s better or just as good as the German copies.
Cheers..... Robert

As I understand it Porsche farms out alot of the work. Some body panels are made by BMW.

Wild guess would be that about 98% of all Boxsters are now made in Valmet Automotive factory, located in Uusikaupunki Finland.

I've been there once and it's an impressive facility...

Their web page is at <a href="http://www.valmet-automotive.com/index2.html" target="_blank">www.valmet-automotive.com</a>

Sami is correct.

Basically you can say every Boxster in US is built in Finland and most of ROW Boxsters there as well (this goes for both, regular and S models).

Porsche keeps some of the production "in house" just that it's not all made in Finland and for product quality reasons.

In fact, Porsche has admitted, quality of cars built in Finland, exceed the quality of cars built in Stuttgart...

Ahh, but Nokia cell phones aren't very durable, are they?

Goes for pretty much all cell phones though... I though I'd be different and got a Siemens, but it sucks too!

You're right, todays cell phones are all about games & gimmics, not so much how good as a phone they are! <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

My 8890 has been flawless so far though (knock on wood), and works all over this globe so I ain't changing any time soon.

According to the VIN, my 2000 S was made in Stuttgart.

The official line is that when the Boxster was such a hit in 1997, Porsche farmed out production to the Finland facility. Over time, the % of Boxsters produced there steadily increased. The quality of the work is said to be excellent (some say the paint quality on the Finnish cars is better - dunno why).

Porsche may still produce some Boxsters at Stuttgart. But I've heard that there is no way to specify where your car is constructed - it's luck of the draw.

My 01 986S is a Valmet car. It's tight as a drum.

Since Fall '99 (2000MY) the only Boxsters assembled in Zuffenhausen are those with a very high level of exclusive options.... Valmet does not have that equipment. The caveat is that a chassis may have been originally spec'd to be a high option vehicle, but would have been changed to fill a client order.
Jeff
PS - even factory delivery Boxsters for the German market are assembled in Finland!

It'll be interesting to see where the the 03 and newer Boxsters come from. We've ordered a lot of cars with the new Exclusive options with the "C" prefix. According to the literature, the cars are assembled, then sent to the Exclusive factory or something. It will add roughly two weeks to production time.

I can't see how it would only add two weeks if the Finland cars were being sent the Exclusive building in Germany. Just have to wait another month or so until our May production arrives.
