Default Hankook R-S4

Looks like TireRack will have them available starting Mar 1.

Has anyone seen a review or test on the R-S4?

I'm looking for a good alternative to RE-71's

Nobody has been able to get their hands on and R-S4 to test yet, so it's a bit open question. Nexen SUR-4G is due out very soon, too, but nobody that's tested it is allowed to talk about it (I think it was a blind test anyway- the previous issue of SCCA's SportsCar magazine covered the testing). Of tires known and available, ZII* is a good alternative to RE-71R and lasts longer, but it's priced higher so there isn't really a significant difference in value and you're giving up some speed to do it.

Maxxis VR-1 and Federal 595 RS-RR are supposed to be pretty good for the money. V720 seems to delaminate very quickly on heavier cars in track conditions.

DiscountTire has a $100 rebate special on RE-71R right now, good through this weekend I think. The prices are a little higher than TR, but DT has free shipping so it's otherwise a wash. I ordered a set of RE-71R yesterday to get the rebate, will be my 3rd set.

ZII* last a little longer, but not much and are noticeable slower.

Haven't tried the others.

I get my RE-71s at the local Firestone store They will meet or slightly beat TR and Costco out the door pricing and if you use a Firestone credit card, you get an additional 5% off on the tires. When there is a Bridgestone rebate, using the F-Stone card doubles it.

Any word yet on how well this tire works? They came out with more sizes.
275/40ZR18, 275/35ZR18, 285/35ZR18 and a 295/40ZR18 that is 27.1" tall. This 40 series tire might work better on the Cam car that I'm building than the shorter Rival S. The motor is not in yet so a long way out to get it running.
Plus they have a 275/35ZR19 and 305/30ZR19

The only test I've seen so far is a skilled miata driver did a test vs a set of sticker Maxxis RC-1 (r-comp) at Thunderhill and estimated the R-S4 was about a second faster.

Dave Whitener did some R888R vs RivalS 1.5 vs R-S4 testing you may all be interested in. He found the R-S4 was quick at the Dixie National Tour last weekend, slightly slower than RivalS 1.5 but generally within the noise. With the soft sidewall, I don't think it will work as well on on soft-sprung Porsches as RE-71R does. Hopefully we'll see more testing and more data soon to get a better picture of R-S4 strengths and weaknesses. If it deals better with heat than RivalS or RE-71R, it may end up a great track tire. Speaking of which, R-888R appears better than R-888 with that respect.

If you are looking for a competitive autox tire, RS4 is not it. It's a fun and very playful tire, but it is not as grippy or precise as RE71r, even more less than new Rivals 1.5.
I have them on my e46 and hoping they will be good for DEs, for autocross, they are 0.5 - 1 seconds slower.

There don't seem to be any 245/40-15 Rival-S 1.5 in the pipeline. I think I'll skip the Hankooks and wait for Rivals.

It's possible I haven't got them warm yet. The warmest event so far was in the 50s here in North East. I have a DE this weekend, so hoping they will get up to the temps then.
Definitely staying with RE71r on the cayman though.

Well I did my 1st AX on the R-S4's and I like them.
They do like it hot. It seemed the hotter I got them the better the grip. Never got greasy at all.
Cold they were pretty good, IMHO about the same as Re-71's cold and hot better.

I am the Corner Working chair for our Ax's, so I don't have to wait in line in the grid and can pretty much get my laps in one after another so I was able to get heat in the tires easially.

From some of the reviews I have read (Miata and S 2000 forums) If you are looking to shave tenths of seconds, maybe they are not the right tire for you. For most it is a good option.

I have a feeling they will be great on the track. I'll know better in late May when I have a track event.

Another advantage is in a given size, they are about .5-.75 " wider than RE-71's, so if you need a few points for classing, you can go smaller if needed

So far I am happy with them
