Default Autocrossing a 928?

Anybody? Bueller??!?!

Anyone out there campaigning a 928 with success? It's one of those cars on my "short list", but it has to be competitive somewhere for me to consider it...

What clubs do you plan to compete with? I imagine, for instance, that in SCCA, there are better porsche choices for the class they run in.

Most PCA regions the 928 is either by itself (rare) or groups with 944/968 series cars.

Since most 928s are autos and few are modded, they don't do well overall, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun to try. In my local PCA region we have 1-2 928 regulars.

What model/year 928 do you have or are you looking for? ie, a 300hp, early euro car with manual may be more fun than a US spec '83 with auto.

My preferences would be
1) 86.5 with manual
2) S4 GT
3) S4 GTS with manual (but awfully rare and expensive)
4) Euro with manual as mentioned above

I have autocrossed and time trialed a 928 for many years (although presently tracking a 911SC).

They can be competitive, depending on how they are classed.
I have had several class wins over the years in Zone 8 and San Diego Region.
I ran a stock motor with stiffer springs and sway bars.

As mentioned above, ideally a manual is best.
I have a '86.5 manual and an '89 manual (not GT).
You do want to have limited slip along with wider wheels and tires, I was running 275's front and rear on the '86.5 with some fender massaging and custom wheels.

An automatic is OK for big tracks, but with the autobahn/mileage gearing you are often in second gear coming out of slow corners when you want to be in 1st.
But there is no manual selection of 1st gear in the later 4 speed automatics ('83 to '95)

Greg

Hey! If you're in the Chesapeake Region, you're more than welcome to compete against me! (Modified 944) Either that, or hook up with your local SCCA and I'm sure they'll hook you up with some very worthwhile competition!

I have always thought it would be fun to do a BSP 928. I bet a well prepared 928 would do OK in that class. That class allows enough weight reduction and performance modifications that the 928 might just shine. Cool thing about BSP is you can mix and match parts from all model years as all 928's are on the same line.

Stock.. Original 24 year old suspension (shocks, springs, bushings etc. Car did come with factory front and rear sway bars). Car only has 43K miles, but I think the front shocks might need replacing.

A couple of us are going to try to hit the last AX of the season at Meadowlands the end of this month. I drive an '85 5-speed and my friend has an '86.5 auto.

Can't wait to give it a shot, I've never even attended an auto-cross. I'll let you know how it goes...
