Default What is your sports car history?

How did you get from your drivers license to your Turbo?

I was poor but worked hard. I put loads and loads of miles on most of these cars.

'72 914 1.7L
'82 Toyota MR-2
'89 Toyota MR-2 Turbo
'92 Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR-4
'99 Jaguar XK-8 (hated it)
'02 Boxter S
'05 Lotus Elise Supercharged. (LOVED it)
'09 911 Turbo.

So three Porsches along the way. Love the Turbo but I doubt I'll every drive a car that was more pure fun than the Elise. It was just too hard to live with. Froze in the winter, fried in the summer, and everything squeaked or rattled. But my god it handled like a dream.

My first car, at a much older age than most, was a MKV Golf GT. I had my learner license the year that I owned it.

My 997 Turbo is the second car I've owned - I've taken my restricted (intermediate) and full license tests in the first 6 months of ownership of my 911

I almost included my 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero with a manual transmission, but it's really a sport sedan.

My list isn't too long yet, but if the current trajectory continues, I'll be driving that P1 in a few years (not likely..)

1980 Honda Civic - 4-speed manual, rust blue. In the end it was a race to see if the clutch would be completely undriveable before the chassis completely fell apart, but it turned out the timing belt won that particular race. So, being an intelligent 18 year old, I spent every penny I had on...

1990 Toyota Supra Turbo Targa - 6-speed, fun car and a huge upgrade, although also a bit of a lemon.. A few months after I got it, I had to spend some pennies I didn't have on a head gasket replacement. :P

1998 Ford Contour - Bit of a step backwards, but I moved across the country for my Master's and needed something cheap. At least it was a 6-speed though. Ended up actually making a deal with a guy to drive it back to the west coast for me afterward (he was a writer doing a story about a cross-country road trip!) and then held onto it for a couple more years.

2005ish Chevy Cobalt (purple) (wife's car)

2003 BMW Z4 3.0i (roadster) - Coming from the Contour, getting into this car felt like entering the cockpit of a fighter jet. Was great getting back into an open top car too, and rather more convenient than the four hex screws and lift it into the the trunk Supra top... Super fun car that I haven't brought myself to part with yet.

2008 BMW 535xi (wife's new car, and great daily driver, aside from the abysmal iDrive)

2009 Porsche 997.1 Turbo Cab (MT) - All the fun of the Z4, twice the power, and back seats for the kids. Hard to imagine an upgrade on this, at least if I want to keep up my unbroken manual transmission streak (wife's cars don't count ). I could see adding another car someday, but I can't imagine ever wanting to part with this one...
