Default Kinda OT: Garage lifts

I'm thinking of getting some sort of lift for the car so I can work on my cars more easily. The problem is that I have only 9 feet of height space as the garage is in the basement.

The maxjax seems like a decent option, or a scissor lift, but it's important to me to have the center of the jack open to do work under the car. Have any of you done any research or explored this for yourself? Or even with a car like ours at 9 feet you won't be able to get much room above my chubby body anyway?

Thanks,

The maxjax is great. I can get my car to the top setting with the a few inches clearance from the garage door when it's open. I'm not a scissor lift fan because of the lift being in the way.

i have a maxjax. but look on garagejournal.com i made several mods to mine to make it useful. bigger problem you will have is you will have to remove the garage door opener and go with a wall mount unit from lift masters.

that being said, i'm also going to get a 4 post lift to park two cars and do work on it when i feel like it too.. the 2 post will be for serious stuff while the 4 post will be for basic stuff.

the rock uses a scissor lift to do all his work...

I have a BendPak MD-6XP scissor lift in my nearly 100 year old garage.. so far I haven't had any issues with the lifting mechanism causing interference while working.. I can just back the car in depending on if I'm doing work on the front or rear. I suppose if I needed to do work in the middle near the driveshaft tunnel it may be an issue.. so far, so good!

I like that it's movable, so I can take it with me if we move, or in a pinch I could move it to the other garage bay without too much effort..

Great Thread! Thinking the same thing.

I came across a 4 post lift a year ago, that would allow a two post conversion. This was a center rail type two point lift off a 4 point (whole car) lift.

Anyone know what lift im describing?

Cincy, not a highjack on your thread but, i realized that the MaxxJax wouldn't suffice for my Cayenne (deal breaker) due to its weight. I since have moved to a home that has 10.5Ft+ ceilings and i can modify the door and tracks myself. This same setup may work for you also but with slight limitations.

A Center lift blocks the mid body and that has pushed me away from them. As you know, Drive train may need some attention from time to time.

Interesting timing for this thread. I have been studying the pros/cons of center lift versus 4 post with regard to storage for my garage. My initial opinion is that I want a center lift to gain most access to wheels and undercarriage. However, is the concern of suspension/spring damage realistic if weight of car is not on wheels during storage? That in itself has long term opposing concerns.

No worries about a hijack Elite1, that's what it's for. I'm still trying to decide myself. I didn't think of the following:

1) Max weight to consider for the other cars in the household (S7 and Odyssey)
2) Garage door concerns
3) Check garagejournal.com for mods as Sidwin mentioned too

More middle class problems to deal with

My solution several years ago was a four post lift for storage of my race car. When I sold the last race car the lift became a storage platform. Now with the 997.2 TT in residence it is once again used for storage.
The lift has movable lift jacks that I can use to raise the wheels off the storage ramps. To allow me to park my other "P" car underneath I had to change out the standard garage door opener for a side mount opener which is very quiet and gave me 4 more inches and a safety margin between the roof of the TT and the garage door.

Found a 4 post similar to what i was describing. Its a 4 post center jack lift.

http://www.bendpak.com/car-lifts/4-post-bridge-jacks/

With this setup, weight shouldn't be a concern but, i cant find the specs on the center lift

http://www.bendpak.com/car-lifts/acc...kit-rj-45.aspx

Looks pretty stout though.

RJ-6 would be the minimum for me. Cayenne weighs near 5,200lbs. I realized that my first link has a photo with weight limits.

Second link doesn't reflect this in their spes sheet.

I have the Quickjack 7000 and love it. I can use either bays of my garage and sometimes it's up for a long time depending what I'm working on
