Just keep a few things in mind. As the Miles go up there are several maintenance issues you should be aware of. None are detrimental but should be noted:

Clutch accumulator and slave cylinder failure
Coolant tank leaks
Coolant pipe leaks
Radiator cracks and leaks

Others can Chime in on some other potential things to check on during a prepurchase inspection of a high mileage 997TT. And while these potential issues are all straight forward to addresses, they are not cheap.

Good luck

its a TIP not a trip.

$55k is a tough price point.

The last issue of Porsche's Panorama Magazine featured a 996TT with over 500k miles on it, 1 owner car. It was incredible to see the short list of things (for that kind of mileage) that went wrong, none of them engine related. The car is still running today.

You're going to likely get a 'dog' in that price range. You can do it, but most people will tell you not to. These get real expensive to maintain/repair. You can get a real nice 996tt though for 50k or even a little less. Why not?

haven't just purchased a car in that price range, I find it hard to believe that you see them frequently. There were three cars in that price range when I was looking, and all of them had issues, including the one I bought (rough interior)

Got a great deal on mine but needed a clutch soon after which is fine since I wanted a Stage 2 clutch right off the bat. Then waterpump started to leak. But it's only $270 for the part. Labor is free in my garage.

So yeah, these cars will eventually need some maintenance stuff and no car is immune especially after the warranty expires.

In thinking about this, a $55k budget will get you a darn fine 996TT and a dicey 997TT.
IMHO, it's a no brainer to get a clean, low mileage, well maintained 996TT and never look back.
