Default The Mods monster is knocking on my door

So...just got my 2011 Turbo S last Thursday...now that I am done pinching myself, I think it's time to start getting serious. One mod is a no brainier, want to replace my button PDK shifter with proper paddles, Techart has a decent offering...http://www.techart.de/en/techart-wor...-shifters.html

and I want to keep the original multifunction wheel...

Here is the one I am pondering - the Intake Plenum:

http://www.ipdplenums.com/products/p...bos/9972-turbo

Does anyone have that Plenum? Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Do you feel the difference? If yes, how? Should I get off the mod ledge? :-)

Congrats! Let the modding begin!

I run the plenum and y-pipe among other modifications. There are two camps in regards to both: the folks who say it is the way to go, and folks who say it robs power (it doesn't).

I believe in data and verification in my job and my hobby, and both - the plenum and y/pipe are proven - on the dyno and at quarter mile / half mile events. We had a car trap 5mph more with plenum in a quarter mile than without. Install was done at the track between runs.

Without a tune you won't feel much of a difference (with the butt-dyno) I would think, so not sure if it will be worth it to spend $1K for it. But it's a good "starter mod" for the turbo.

Hope that helps...

You just need to balance the mod bug with warranty if you're still in factory or CPO. Most aftermarket warranties pay less attention to mods than Porsche. That could be the understatement of the year.

The best bang for your buck is a tune and exhaust though. TP has done more mods on the 9a1 engine than most anyone on here, so look at his posts to get a good idea of where you can go.

The IPD stuff would be way down the list of where I'd go first (or ever). But that's just me

I would say longboarder has done a ton of mods too and very documented results if you want other options.

Yup, Adam is pushing his car quite a bit. He has a good youtube channel documenting some results including the plenum... great all around dude and was very helpful when I started playing with the car. Know him from my supercharged M3 days.

Awesome! Thank you! I too have an M3 (E46) in my past! Once could say we age well :-).

Thank you! I'll study up on his posts! Franky, dare I say it, Turbo S has enough power (if there is such a thing)...but throttle is a bit non liner and numb from idle to high 2000's in RPM band, then it's amazing. I am attempting to make mine a daily driver, so deal with LA traffic everyday, having sport button always on is hard...so a better/more linear throttle response at low RPM in "normal" mode is really what I'd like to accomplish, more power is secondary for me...any thoughts?

Thank you! Points well taken. Any good resource on getting educating on tune options for .2 engines? Better throttle response at lower RPM is main objective...if I gain HP/Torque, fine, but sharper throttle without compromising reliability woudl be my most desired mod after leaving with a car for a week. I am planning to autocross it at El Toro with Orange Coast on Fathers day, so I learn cars limits and how she acts full out, so my "wish list" may grow :-). But for now, paddle shifters and sharper throttle would make the car "perfect". Suggestions?

Thank you! As I am reading more and getting feedback I am getting this sense - tune would probably help me most with what I am trying to accomplish - sharper/more linear low RPM throttle in normal mode...any suggestions on getting smarter on tuning options? There is a lot of opinions out there, can you help me separate signal from the noise?

Yep...I would start with a tune...and then maybe exhaust....For most, that is plenty!

Good luck

Personally I would start with the exhaust so that way when you get the tune you will get the full advantage of it!

Besides here I think 6speed online is a good resource, a lot more modding going on there - younger crowd. But also a lot more bull****. So beware.

In regards to tunes, I honestly believe they are all within the same league. They all dial up the right markers while staying in safe parameters. I like Cobb/BBI, but I've heard great things about GIAC as well, again, I don't think they vary all that much, but I'd stay away from total custom tunes by some random tuner.

Totally agree; the car definitely needs it.

Custom tuning on top of the Cobb platform by protuning freaks is getting rave reviews all over the place. Definitely stay away from random tunes. Off the shelf tunes are ok but nothing beats a solid custom tune and these PTF guys have been with Cobb doing custom tunes for a very long time. Cobb AP also beats getting and carrying a laptop around and its a great datalogging platform.

Thank you! My friend and a more experienced Porsche owner than me (I am on my second week) told me to live with the car for at least a month. I've been driving daddy-mobiles since I gave up my M3 a decade ago...he suggests I should get used to the car and then see what are my priorities. I am taking her to an autocross on Fathers day to find its (mine) limits and have a better grip on car's behavior. So far my only annoyance is the non linear nature of gas pedal from idle till about 3,000 RPM when you are making smaller, gentler corrections...this is my first turbo, so maybe I just need to adjust my behavior and be more assertive with gas pedal...I am putting it Techart shift paddles, these are on order...tune sound fun, but also a little scary...maybe I have too much faith in Porsche engineers getting it perfect...thank you for all your feedback! I'm learning a ton! THANK YOU!

Glad you are enjoying the car, it must be very exciting! I do think an exhaust would be best to do first. It's better to do hardware before software IMO.
