Default For me.....why the 997 Turbo?

It all started in the early 80's when I was a kid, my desire to own a 911 turbo. Why? I mean my dad had a lot of great cars that could have influenced me otherwise. He bought a new Ford Mustang 5.0 convertible in 1984 that was very impressive. Probably one of the best Mustangs IMO. That was followed by a new 1988 Corvette. My first car was a restored 1957 Chevy two door post with a 327 chevy - my dad and I did the work. Two years later traded that in for a mint 1970 Corvette Stingray with a matching 454 engine. My dad at the same time bought a 1963 Corvette Stingray split window - all original. The next two decades was just the same - trading and buying incredible cars. Today, my dad has a Viper ACR and a 2012 Shelby 500 in his garage. My point is this.....we never experienced a 911 turbo although it was IMO the ultimate car. Why? I don't really know, maybe it was because they weren't "American Muscle Cars"! Most of the my exposer was limited as it was either from movies, magazine articles and or rare sighting in the big city. Anyway.....through all this, the Porsche Turbo was the ultimate car for me. Car just looked incredible and better than anything else. Nothing compared.

Last year, I received a call from the CEO of the company I have worked for 17 years. He said to go buy the car of my dreams.....on him. Basically, I had no choice, he insisted. Few weeks later, I own a 2007 997.1 turbo with 15,000 easy miles. A dream come true.

Yes, this is the ultimate car. For me....there is no improvement by moving up to a later model. I truly believe this will be a classic that will last my lifetime and pass on to one of my kids. I really believe this car will be as good 20 years from now and beyond. The esthetics are perfect! The performance (with tune and exhaust) is perfect. I look forward in continuing to modify the car as it wears out, with suspension kit, LED lights etc. It will be fun rebuilding the motor someday. The car is a beast and I love it. It is noisy, it's loud, it shakes and has a few rattles, but it is perfect and it makes me smile every time I get to drive it. Yes, this is why? The 30 year wait was worth it. Looking forward to the next 30 years.

Awesome story. I like you had a father that only liked and built muscle cars. He laughed at my desire to have a Porsche and called a them "A **** **** box". Ah yes my father was very subtle..

I finally got my TT a few years ago.. I have thought many times about getting another car but I can't come up with a good enough reason to sell mine.. I used to worry about the miles.. Not anymore..

I have no intention of selling mine. And like you said it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it too!

Nice story for sure ! You must be a great employee to get such a bonus.
Well done, I am sure you deserve it.

Reading your comments about the car I have to agree. I think the manual 997 turbo will be a sought after classic and within 20 years it will be the most desired turbo of them all.

Great post.
I know how you feel, except had to pay for mine. Totally worth it.
Makes me happy every day to drive, and I look forward to going to work every morning because I get to drive my car (7 months a year).
My dad always pushed me to buy a used 914 when I was a teenager, back then I only wanted American Muscle. Glad I grew out of that.
Enjoy your car brother. We really are fortunate.

Your story was a great one to read. Unlike you my father had no interest in cars. My mother on the other hand liked to drive quickly and the car she had, when I was learning to drive, was a '67 Chevrolet Caprice with a 396. It was wonderful. Although I had been interested in cars from a much younger age, the Caprice was the car that made me appreciate that cars really could be so much more than a way to get from one location to another.

Awesome story! I always wanted an 85 Mustang 5.0 growing up. But the very first sports car I got to drive was my Uncle's early 80's gold, 911 Targa. It was like a 6.0sec 0-60 and I couldn't believe how crazy fast it was. I guess because of that, my '09 997TT isn't the most expensive car I own but the one the makes me feel like I finally made it to the top. It's truly a piece of art.

Great story. I was just talking with a guy here in Houston with a similar story. Had American muscle all his life. With the latest being a 2012 or 2013 Shelby 500 Mustang. Said he wanted to try the forbidden fruit of the 997.1tt. He is now hooked. He say he was just sad he didn't do this years ago.

I was a domestic guy most of my life. Played a bit with eagle turbo talons as well.
But mostly it was firebirds and fieros and trans ams and v8 machines but the turbo talons did school me to the benefits of all wheel drive and turbos.
Year or so ago go tired of my 08 z06 . Was great car but was sick of driving manual where live now.
Got a Mercedes SL350 for daily driver than picked up an SL55 Mercedes for fun sports car toy and bonus was its a retractible hardtop.
Now was doing ok financially so figured would get me a 911 turbo and got my 07 month or so ago. I have not yet been able to drive it more than a few minutes as need to get it safetied and its still winter up here. But from little bit have drove it ,it seems like a great car.
It is a tiptronic not a full manual as said nowadays with the traffic and hills here just not into manual s anymore but have heard the newest cars have feature called hill assist so might possibly look at manual again in the future.

I also still do like my domestics though and plan to add a new z06 in couple of years to my stable and possibly a newer viper as well. GM is now offering an 8 speed auto in their z06 previously only offered manual. Viper so far is only offered manual.

See nothing wrong as a car guy with liking Porsche,Mercedes, Viper, etc Nice cars are nice cars regardless of make and if win the lotto there will be a Ferrari in my garage, a Lambo, a GTR, Ford GT,R8..

So enjoy your new baby. Should be damn quick with exhaust and tuning. Might do that to mine see how it goes after play with it for awhile. Spring can't come soon enough!
