Rattling Noise below 1800RPM
Thoughts on Noise on 2009 997TT 20K miles
When the 997TT is just off idle and between 1800RPM there is a rattling around noise.
1st I thought the heat shield maybe like a Catalytic converter heat shield noise.
Not That
2nd Thought maybe the IMS shaft one dealer said that is the cause.
Maybe
3rd Last knowledgeable service fellow who has worked on my car says it's the Turbos rattling designed to be loose for oil passage. : what ever that means"
"who Knows"
I have heard this noise on many Turbos but any ideas what it is?

Maybe you have a piece of gravel stuck between your exhaust pipe and the exhaust pipe heat shield.
It really could be a number of things, most of which can be sorted out by observation and process of elimination.

My WAG is it is the sound the car makes when operated at too low an RPM and too high a load.
Save for 1st gear my 996 Turbo (6-speed) doesn't like operating much below 2K RPM and I try to avoid operating it below or much below 2K RPM in the higher gears.
While I haven't driven one to confirm this I would expect the 997 Turbo to react similarly.

I have experienced IMS issues and you cannot hear rattles from it. Trust me on this one...no way...pull out the oil filter and you will see lots of metal bits.
The "turbo rattle"?! I would not have that service guy add windshield washer to my car!...rattles from turbos?!
Typically low rpm rattles are clutch or driveline related, or you are lugging the engine and perhaps transmission mount or something like that...not sure if your car is a TIP or M/T...This is all a WAG.

Mine is noisy, has the "marbles rattling around" sound to it below 2000 rpms. Had a highly experienced Porsche mechanic drive it and he said it was not uncommon in these cars and from all the other info I've been able to find, it is completely normal, but I cant say im crazy about it.

Sounds like some of you guys are having the same exact noise that I've experienced.
I've heard it in quite a lot of turbos so I'm sure it's normal.
My car is the Tiptronic

So Bottom line does anyone know what is making the rattle sound?
Drove a friend's Turbo yesterday his was a stick and while he keeps revs up at 1800 it was present.

Ive heard about 7 different theories. Im starting to think the only guys who really know are Porsche engineers.

I experience this rattle too in my Tip. It is encouraging that others have this without any problems and it is "normal". I'm still interested in finding out what causes it though.

I called Brumos Porches today spoke to there head mechanic he confirmed it's the gearing driving the IMS shaft all normal like we already knew.

My car sometimes rattles on idle, I asked about it when I first drove the car and I was told it was normal. It's an 09 CPO car so I didn't worry about it. It only does it occasionally and I haven't noticed a pattern, but I'm a new owner. As long as it doesn't get worse or lead to a failure it doesn't bother me. It would be nice to know what exactly going on though. As a newbie I'm not up yet on the intricacies of my TT yet.

These engines that is the Mezger engines are noisy beasts. Lots going on. They are located just behind the driver and those intercooler air intakes are just dandy for funneling/routing engine compartment noises to the driver's ears.
Often I hear some kind of rattle with my car's engine. But what is going on is the mind seeks patterns and where it can't find a pattern it can make one up. When I start to imagine I am hearing something I mentally reset the old hearing processor and all I hear is just random noise from a very busy engine.
The only noise I have heard that is not my imagination is often when the car is fully up to temperature the clutch/tranny rattles. I can stop this by depressing then releasing the clutch pedal. If I race the engine a bit then let its RPMs return to idle often the noise comes back. This is normal.
Just a few words of advice. Do not let the oil remain in service too long. Up to you how often you want to change the oil/filter but I find the change -- reduction -- in engine noise with a 5K mile oil/filter service notable. Run a proper oil. Do not overfill the engine but run the oil towards the upper end of the fill level. Remember when the engine is really working some of that oil is in the interior of the engine and the oil pump doesn't have a full oil tank to draw from. The oil level in the tank is down a few quarts. If the level is say nearly a quart (or more) low to begin with…
