Default DIY oil change

Planning to do my first oil change following this DIY

http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...-m97-70-a.html

Are the parts and torque settings quoted in the above correct? And I'm planning to use Mobil 1 0W40

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Yep, I followed that DIY the first time around and just did my second oil change last weekend from memory. First was with M1 0W-40, now I put in M1 5W-40 TDT. Changing the oil on these cars is so easy compared to my 993 for instance.

Art - as you can see, I was the last one to post on that DIY thread. I will attest that the instructions were great and experienced zero problems. Good luck in your efforts!

Make sure the container's drain plug that the oil is draining into is open. You may ask why I know this. My son was helping and he laughed his *** off. My wife was pissed and the paver guy that replaced 40 of them was happy. What an idiot, I felt like one.

I would also save receipts for oil etc and document when you changed the oil for the records, if you ever go to sell the car, those would be a good thing to have.

Got my parts from Suncoast so planning to tackle the oil change next week. Since I need to get the oil temp up to 175-200 F what's the best technique to go about draining the oil without burning off my face?

I've done many oil changes before on other cars but I normally do them "cold". Just want to understand how the oil shoots out of the drain plug so I can position myself correctly

thx!!

Keep your face away from the engine case and wear gloves. There isn't all that much oil that comes out of the case. The oil tank is where most of it is.

Agreed...and lay down lots of "diapers" on the ground as you will get splash, etc and you don't want to damage or stain your floor...

respect for the DIY, I used to do that too back when I had crappy Fords
off topic:
I'll never forget the time a friend helped me change the water pump in my 1985 Ford LTD...
when we were done we had a long bolt; at least 6 inches, that we didn't put back in

quick update. Completed my first oil change yesterday. took about 2 hrs but that included a lunch break and about 20-30 min to allow the oil to drain. Probably can do it in 1 hr next time

if you have the right tools this is an easy DIY. I also ordered the filter kit from Suncoast, it comes with 4 crush washers which was a bit confusing until I realized that the 2 smaller ones are for the turbos (I think LOL!).

I drained roughly ~8 qrts and topped it off with 8.5 qrts to reach the electronic dip stick full limit (yes the Mezger burns oil if you drive it hard!).

If you're considering this DIY go for it, if you are even slightly decent with a wrench it's simple

There will still be some residual oil left in the turbos - certainly not a lot but that will part of what you calculated as "burned".

I'm not sure if that's right, because regardless of the amount in the turbos what I drained should equal what I put back in. But when I measured the oil prior to the oil change the meter read about ~0.5 qrts low
