2011 GT3 synchro problem
A friend of mine recently purchased a 2011 GT3 from a Dealer under a CPO. The car has 11k miles with a clean DME.
He is experiencing the car jumping out of second gear at 3k RPM, the dealer said the problem is covered under a service bulletin. The claim is that the gears produced had to much spacing between them the repair also involves replacement of the pilot shaft. I could not find any information on this issue, has anyone heard of this problem. I asked for a copy of the service bulletin.
I'm wondering if you intended on keeping your GT3 for 5 years or more does it make sense to get the car on a CPO plan?

I remember hearing something about like this on older Turbos. But I don't recall hearing about this on GT3 cars. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Trans issues are pretty rare with this, more common issues are the coolant pipes and cam actuators on the .2 cars. Along with the diff if you track the car. Overall, they're robust.
One issue that does pop up in the trans is 2nd and 3rd gear synchro issues on cars that are driven very aggressively, frequently. Basically the syncrhos wear.
CPO? nah, for every 1 issue you hear 100s have none. But if it makes you sleep better.... its like any other insurance.

I was able to get a "print out" of warranty work done on my '11 GT3RS. Simply stated that transmission was replaced at around 1,500 miles. No other details....... Someone also said that these transmissions are not serviceable. Anyone chime in on this??

This is unlike the PDK & GT4 (and probably 991GT3.2) transmissions which have NO parts available from Porsche.

On early 996TT there was a second gear pop out after a full/part throttle lift off. My new '01 6TT was repaired in '02 and I don't think that I got a new transmission. Wow, it has been 15 years.

Never heard of a second gear problem, but know of a couple of GT3's that had first gear problems. Wouldn't go fully into 1st. Would have to play with throttle and it would slide in. (That sounded terrible)

There was a thread discussing this issue a few years back:

I had a problem with mine popping out of second gear when decelerating. The mechanics thought I just couldn't drive until it happened to them. They rebuilt the synchros and no problems since.

Also, it's my understanding that the maximum a CPO will cover is 6yrs from service date. If you're talking about CPO's in this generation of car at best you're talking about something less than a year of coverage. Not sure it's worth it.

The service bulletin, which I believe was really a note in the workshop manual, is as follows:
WM 354055 Eliminating transmission symptoms - Replacing gear wheel set for 1st/2nd gear (Jumping out of 2nd gear/SY3011)
The work involves installation of a replacement 1-2 gearwheel set, apparently a manufacturing tolerance issue on some units. Part number:
997.302.901.91
The actual work involves removal of transmission, significant disassembly, installation of new parts, and reassembly - serious hours involved here. The new gearwheel set requires precise setup, requiring an alignment tool ($10k and only used on this unit and for this purpose, some dealers don't have it), part number:
00072197460
Early in lifecycle, Porsche would replace the transmission ($18k for new unit) to learn what's going wrong... then they switch to field (dealer) repair in this case.
As an aside, With the transmission out, you can have them bench test the LSD and address any issues with that.

My 2011 GT3 (14k miles) is at the dealer right now with the trans out for new 1st and 2nd gears, synchros and pilot shaft under CPO (Thank God). The car would "ease" itself out of 2nd at various rpms and loads but mainly decelerating from about 3500 rpm it would come out at about 2700 rpm.
Tech says there is too much gap on the shaft between 1st and 2nd. Thanks for the tip on the LSD.
Only extended warranty I ever purchased !
