Mark - I just went through this process and here what I did and learned.

Many folks opted for the 996 cup shifter and 996 cup shifter cables. However when I attempted to purchase these, PMNA replied that they are no longer making the 966 cup shifter. I was also later informed that they are no longer going to manufacture the 996 cup cables. So whatever inventory is out, that is all there is. The 997.2 OE shifter, in itself is nearly identical to the 996 cup shifter, but with a shorter throw. So in essence the 997.2 GT3 OE shifter is a 996 cup short throw shifter (metal bushing, etc). So what I ended up doing with a 996 cup cables and linkage to my 997.2 GT3 OE shifter....and the improvement is VERY noticeable. Shifting is crisp and very tactile. Great mod. 2nd to 3rd is no problem. Feel very mechanical. Hope this helps!
