Default Oil Change cost

Hey guys,

Just got back from getting my oil changed at my local dealer in my .2 GT3 and it cost $478. I was originally told $400 so they honored it this time, but from here on out it will be $478. Does this sound right? If this is the going rate I will be doing it my self from here on out I think. It's about $100 in a filter and oil.

Pending on oil brand. Buy 9 quarts. X$
oil filter ~$15
misc crush washers ~ $5

30-45 minutes time consumption

sounds like you paid ~$380 in labor

The tech is only "working" on the car for ~15 minutes. The rest of the 15-30 minutes is the car sitting on the lift.
When you take all that into account - for non-skilled labor- that's 4 figure's hourly rate changing oil. I know MB's in SF Area put their "new, in training" techs to do oil changes, which is even more of a blow. I know this as well... lets just say i know.

OP question - if you can't do it yourself or if i couldn't do it myself - id pay is $50 in labor. Being generous.
Total no more then $175 including everything. Tax -yada -yada. Me personally. I'm frugal.

I'm 68 years old and still do it myself - total cost with Mobil 1 0W-40, filter and washers is around $70.

The GT3 is less trouble to change than on my wife's Lexus or my Jeep Cherokee since there is no silly belly pan to remove. I do let the oil drain for at least an hour (warm engine) and the total working time is 30 minutes or a bit less.

DIY routine maintenance on these cars is relatively simple if you have the proper tools and don't mind getting horizontal.

well... i get charged (at my shop)
1 hour labor for both engine and trans fluid change
+ parts
Filter is about $20, oil is more as I use Motul...
But lets say I get a transmission and oil change with $20/L motul for less than that.

Unless you're stuck on dealer stamps in your service book find a good indy.

Oil changes are super easy on these cars. I just don't do them due to time at the moment. I change oil on GT3 a lot (track days)

Jack, i agree. Get a lift Dannmar Max Jax from Costco. I got one a few years back for ~$2k on sale. Best tool in my garage. Will cut your time in half and you get to clean under tray of car in the mean time.

1 hour makes sense for both, as the tranny fluid takes more work. Speaking of which , i need to do mine. What fluid do you use ?
Yes on motul fluid for the motor - 5 qts jugs from amazon for about ~$50

Thanks guys, I was at the dealer waiting for 2.5 hours because they claim the oil change takes that long due to having two drain plugs and filling it a little at a time. Sounded like a crock to me, but I was cordial and said oh ok.

i've been running the numbers to try to figure out if there was any reasonable explanation for the price tag, but really...even if you're drinking a beer...get drunk, and sober up, you're still not at that figure.

if you plan on doing this yourself it's a good time to swap the plug with something that accepts a normal socket. i have a pn somewhere.

it's very simple. I usually change my oil at the track since there's oil disposal there, all you need is a jack, stand, oil filter wrench, and the two sockets.

jack up one side of the car, open both drain plugs. while this is happening, I move to the top and remove the old oil filter. once everything is done, replace crush washers, snug up drain plugs. replace oil filter + oring. refill oil.

40$ of oil (10qt oil)
10$ for a filter
2$ for the crush washers

i have motul 300v power 5w-40 in the car now. Just trying it out well, to try something different. We will run an oil test to see how it holds out relative to the Torco under similar usage.
