I just bought a 2010 gt3 with 12000 miles one week ago. I notice on cold start much smoke and a grinding noise that lasts about one second. If the engine is immediately shut down and restarted there is no smoke or grinding noise. Car seems to run fine and I do not hear any other unusual sounds as I drive the car. Whats going on?

Totally normal on my 61,500 mile example too. Behaves just as you've mentioned.

Also, for the RS flywheel...you won't hear it at first, then after 1-2 minutes it will change idle and you'll hear the clatter! It's an endearing sound for RS owners.

I am worried that the grinding sound is caused by the bolts working free from the variocam. What causes the brief grinding sound on cold start?

mine smokes whenever it feels like it.
no rhyme or reason to correlate it to anything.
sometimes it does, sometimes it does not.
i killed all the mosquitos in our COTA garage one time.

I notice with mine that the rattle goes straight away as soon as you lift your foot off the clutch pedal.

But for the OP, yes it does smoke on start ups, but not every time.
