Considering purchasing my first 997.1, help me choose...

In the long run, a '05 might not be less because there is additional cost of maintaining the IMSB. An educated buyer will understand this and not run form an '05. If you are going to track the car or even run it hard for AX, I prefer to have the ability to change out the IMSB.

UPDATE:
I negotiated a price for the car with the condition the PPI would be clean. Well, the PPI came back with a number of issues most within the area of expected items with so many miles on the odometer. It needs brake pads and rotors, tires show age cracks, air conditioning needs to be recharged, and a few other small issues.
The areas that concern me are; the report shows the tiptronic transmission isn’t shifting properly. The shop recommends a filter and fluid service. seems reasonable, maybe another item to negotiate but my main concern is with the over-rev info from the cars computer.
Number of ignitions range 1 1221/3560.9H
Number of ignitions range 2 556/3560.9H
Number of ignitions range 3 388/3560.9H
Number of ignitions range 4 339/3560.9H
Number of ignitions range 5 256/3560.9H
Number of ignitions range 6 91/3560.9H
Operating hours counter 3561.2H
So I’ve been reading all over about tiptronic transmissions and over-rev. Seems it’s pretty easy and a more common occurrence to shift down too soon while decelerating in manual mode. causing an over rev condition. most say to only consider a car with a minimum of 50 hours use beyond a range 6 over rev condition. It seems in this case it must have been during a test drive as it’s only been about 20 minutes of use since the last occurrence. 3 ignitions equal 1 revolution of the engine so its been in range 6 for about 30 revs. Range 5 for about 85 revs. So my question is, would you still consider this car? if so, would it be reasonable to ask for an engine warranty for at least 50 addition hours?

Seems that this car has a lot going against it in terms of required service, DME report, and location. And no telling if a filter and fluid will fix the Tip shifting issues.

skip it and move on, sounds like that car has had a hard life which is a recipe for issues down the road (or now with the tranny). too many good options out there to take a chance on something like this.

On the surface, it doesn't look good. Considering it's equipped just as I want it and the price is right, but what it would take to get it in the condition i'd like seems like a ton of money... but...
I'm pretty sure the seller will address the transmission issue, he can't sell it without it driving well. I think the other issues are not to far off from what you'd expect buying a car over 10 years old with so many miles unless it's a garage queen and then i'd be looking at a premium sell price. With the exception of the DME over-rev, I'm not afraid of any of the issues from the PPI (brakes, rotors, tires, etc) I can do them myself. I actually like working on my own car and saving some coin at the same time... At the end of the day, any work done on the car should bring that particular part back to as good as a garage queen.
So, it really comes down to the DME over-rev situation. Understanding what it truly means and if this alone is reason to walk?

Thanks for the feedback from everyone. Just to close the loop on this particular car, I've finally stepped away from the emotional connection and come to my senses.
I've decided to walk away. Maybe I'm letting a good deal go, maybe dodging a major bullet (almost all data points to the latter)... Who knows...
The one big lesson I've learned is; Pre purchase inspections can get expensive but just like good divorce attorneys... Worth every penny...
I've not however given up my search for the right car... With my new knowledge. The search continues...

Well, I'm back. One year later and,,, The good news is I've finally found another 997.1 that fits my requirements and budget. The not so great news is it's in San Diego, Ca. It's a 2005 C2 equipped exactly the way I want. Well price for a higher milage car (looking for a project car so I don't expect perfection). I'm a little concerned about it being a mid year 2005 and what IMS it has, I'm not sure how to tell, (Maybe someone here can tell from the VIN? VIN WP0CB29935S765378)... I don't really want to make the trip from Portland till I have confidence it's worthy of a flight. I don't suppose anyone here lives or works in the area? I'd like to get a set of unbiased eyes looking at it before committing to a trip and a PPI. Its at 8085 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, Ca. 92111... Anyone near by have a moment to help a fellow Rennlist member with his dream car?

Thanks for the manufacture date. That’s right on the edge of mid year. They sent a picture of the door plate. It matches the vin manufacture date. I’ll see if I can get the engine number. I made a typo above, it’s a C2S,
