I could have purchased a 991.1 C2S/C4S for the same money as my 997 GTS. But after driving it I didn't get what I wanted out of a sports car. I'll have to try 991.2.

I'm particular about the size of my cars, and I didn't get the dynamic feel I wanted that would outweigh the additional size of the 991, albeit not much size. I'm usually looking for the absolute smallest car I can get that will do what I want. I still want to try 991.1 GT3 as I'm guessing how good the car is will make me ignore the slightly larger car. Anything I get going forward (as far as 911s) will need to be more hardcore than my GTS. So that only leaves GTx

Sigh. Earlyish in the 997.1 cycle PAG (when it was still PAG) made the corporate decision to increase production of the 911 line (and correspondingly increase profits). But 2008 came along and this was put on hold, ostensibly to begin with the 991 cycle. PAG still made and sold a lot of 997s but these cars still were sports cars first and GT cars second. It's one thing to increase production but then you have to sell the cars, which means bringing in new customers. And these new customer want more bells and whistles and less rough around the edges sporty cars. So PAG (by this time VWAG) does a brilliant job with the 991.1/.2 in making it more luxury (=GT) while still mainataining a great performance standard. And therein lies the rub for enthusiasts. The 991 and beyond is an exceptional performance car that offers a high degree of luxury - it is not the **** and vinegar niche sports car that will bite you if you don't know how to handle it for Porsche devotees. I can only speak for myself but I will forgo the 991 and anything that comes after it because I prefer the lack amenties, ideosyncratic, underpowered (if you can call 410 hp underpowered), and sometimes uncomfortable 997.2. I wouldn't necessarily call it raw or the last true 911 but it is a throwback to an engineering philosophy that was more low production enthusiast minded than what Stutgart is currently producing (which is a great car - just different). So, whether or not the 997 is the last true 911 has been debated, what I know for certain is that it is my last 911, true or not. In the end, if I want luxury I'll drive my Audi (or more precisely, it will drive me) and if I want performance, wrung out with some attention and skill, I'll take out the 997.

That's really good to hear, my understanding was that DFI is DFI and all DFI's have carbon buildup but maybe Porsche does it right.

Waiting for them to drop another $10k and I'll be
jumping over to a 991. Maybe next Spring 2018.

What's stopping me? I absolutely love everything about my car and I don't like the 991.

Porsche has priced me out of the market. Also, service on the 991 will be out of this world costly. You can't get to anything on the engine.

If you ask a 964 owner, they will say a 993 is not a true 911. If you ask a 993 owner, a 997 is not a true 911. If you ask a 997 owner, a 991 is not a true 911. If you ask a 991 owner, a Cayman is not a true 911 And so on...

The 997 just does it for me looks, performance, sound, etc wise. Price is kind of irrelevant, because if I could afford a brand new 991, I would rather buy a 997.1 GT3.

So true. In a blind driving test I bet 95% of people couldn't tell the difference between the 2 (except the faster 991 would probably give it away) regardless of how they claim that they absolutely 100% could tell the diff between the hydraulic and electric steering

If you want analogue, raw and visceral (whatever that means) then buy an dirt bike. But that's not a 997

Oh and its 1" shorter than a 991
Perfectly said. These are my reasons too, I completely agree.

As someone said above, drive it and it'll become clear! Whenever I drive in something else, even our Ferrari, and then hop back in the driver's seat of my 997.2S, it's impressive how I reacquire an appreciation for what makes the car so great - enough tech versus older 911s w/o a profusion of clutter in the cockpit that one sees in newer 911s, great power, near telepathic steering and handling, comfort and space for road trips or Costco runs, enough power for when I need/want it, and the color combo I waited, and waited, and waited for. I'm an inveterate Cars.com surfer, but I hardly ever see anything else that I'd trade my 997.2S for. I just wish I could turn back the clock and drive miles off her!
