964 for a 997
I want a 997. Tell me I'm wrong for wanting to trade my 964 for a 997. I know aircooled 911 values are going through the roof, but I never bought this car as an investment vehicle. I want performance, and honestly, my 964 is doing good to keep up with new Toyotas and Hondas on the HW.

You can't be wrong about it. It's an impossibility. Only you know your purposes for owning a vehicle vs another
I would like a 964 or a 993.. but I could not swap out my GTS for one because of the way I use my GTS. I could not, and would not have purchased one of those instead of this. I did 18k miles 10 months! Would I do that to an air cooled 911? LOL no. Only if I had about 5 of them, and still probably not. I've slowed down on the mileage drastically now that I have a company car and live 3 miles from work anyways. In any case.. my usage for the GTS is casual and I would not use an air cooled 911 in such a casual way. Just some examples of why the context makes the case for the car.

Go for it.
997 and who knows you might even find a 997 turbo for the right price. That would solve your performance desires, and if it turns out you miss the 964, they're still around.
When I was shopping a few years ago I was looking at 964's and 993's - but for the money, the 997 was the best value.
Looking back could I have flipped a 964 or 993 and made a little scratch? Maybe... but I would have needed to keep the miles down, and I bought mine to drive it, sounds like you're in the same boat. One day you'll look back at the string of cars you had along the way and the 964 will be a fond memory, but you won't be bummed about it in a 997, that's for sure.
What kind are you looking for?
Targa, 4s, 2s, cab, turbo?

I owned 3 964's back in the day. When the time came to buy another 911, I went with a 997 just because I didnt want to go back and the 997 is a perfect evolution of the 911.

I sold my 964 in June 2015 for a 997.1 C2S because I had owned the 964 for 5 years and was looking for a change. When it comes to cars I'm not a buy and hold forever kind of guy. So far I am very happy. Would I like to be able to have both, yes, but that isn't practical for me.
I posted my impressions on this board a while back so you can search my name and find out what I think.

997s are awesome and if you get one it won't take long to decide if it's the one for you or if you have to have another 964 during which time 964 prices won't change much. I say go for it.

Pics of the car would be great, and what you might be thinking of selling it for.

I had a 964 C4, and kept it for 12 years. wonderful car, great sounds, very planted and easy to drive. But, very different from the 997, that is faster, more refined, easier to live with day to day, lots of options. One is raw 90's air cooled, the other is more buttoned down and refined.
Final issue for me is that I just never liked the looks of the 964 (I know, treason) due to those big bumper covers, and I really do like the looks of the 997, and almost every other 911...except the 996 of course.

As was suggested, only you can make the determination.
That said (and as someone who also came from the air-cooled side of the marque), there was no looking back for me even though I kept my SC for ~1.5 years after purchasing my 997, just to make sure I made the right move. While I too would have liked to have kept both, it was not practical and someone was chasing my 911 and I finally heard the right price and that was that.
A close friend owns a gorgeous perfectly sorted 964 and while on a long day road trip last fall to the Sierra, I flipped him the keys to the C4S for a leg over the Sierra Crest. To say the least, he was highly reluctant to return the keys to me and the stupid smile he wears when driving the 964 was a but stupider. after he slowly exited the Tart!
Good luck with your decision and have fun in the chase if you go down the h2o road!
P.S. And while I enjoyed piloting my buddy'a 964 during that leg, buckling myself back into the 997 was not just right, it was absolutely perfect...

Really? You think I could just swap keys? Most 997s are 40K+ Don't think I could get that much for mine. Mine has 98K mls, 8/10 exterior, 9/10 interior. Had a top end and clutch replacement at 88K mls. Got it from a collector in Ventura, CA. But it has the unattractive D90s and rectangular side mirrors.
