Default Goodbye 997.2. Hello 997.1.

My 2009 997.2 C2 was my first Porsche, and after around 30 years of the 911 being my dream car, it will always hold a special place in my heart and mind. I am truly a Porsche fanboy through and through.

However, after a year, I started getting a wandering eye. I knew I loved the 911... but I wanted just a little bit more. Enter my new car--2008 997.1TT!

I will probably be spending less time on this part of Rennlist going forward, but I wanted to say thank you to all of the regular and even the occasional posters for creating such a fantastic community. I hope the same holds true over in the 997 Turbo section of this forum!

Just unimaginably gorgeous!!!! Congrats!! Just got my first Porsche 997 C2, and im hooked! Next up on my list is a 997 turbo for sure!! Enjoy her in good health!

And please spill the details about your likes/dislikes about the switch! Other than the obvious power differences, I am curious to how the 2 cars compare!

Salud!

I'd like to hear the comparo as well. My 2011 c2s 6spd is still new to me (9 months and my first Porsche and wont be my last) and STILL makes me smile everytime i drive it. Just one of those things, like, "why'd i wait so long?"

But, and theres always a big but, I would like MORE power.....so, me thinking the same thing.

Congrats on purchase. Beautiful car!!!

Thanks for the comments everybody! And atc5- I know. For those that were asking for a comparison between the two cars, I'll do my best at a review.

First off, I know actions speak louder than words, so me saying this will seem almost hypocritical... but the base 911 is all the car that anyone needs. It is plenty fast, looks great, and made me happy every time I got behind the wheel. My indy mechanic, who is also a friend, told me that I didn't need to upgrade, and in fact advised me to just keep the C2 because I'd have all the legal fun a person could have in it. I didn't listen.

The Turbo has gobs of torque from everywhere. It has very little lag. It takes off like a rocket without having to launch or floor it, and it pulls and pulls and pulls until you chicken out. It seems as if it will never stop accelerating. In the C2, you knew when you were driving fast. In the Turbo, it really and truly sneaks up on you. Part of that is the sound. My C2 had the Tubi exhaust and just sounded awesome, under cold start and WOT especially. The Turbo is much quieter. It does have a nice deep idle sound that I like, and I especially like the whoosh sound that you can hear from the turbos spooling up, but under WOT you hear more engine than exhaust, and both sound quiet for how fast you're going. I understand why one of the first mods people do to them is to change out the exhaust.

My C2 also had H&R springs and sways, and the suspension was tight. You could corner with confidence and the car sat nice and low. The Turbo, on the stock suspension, sits a tad bit higher. That said, it feels more comfortable. This could be a stock vs. aftermarket suspension thing, but the Turbo is the car that I'd rather take on a 500mi road trip if I were to choose between the two. The other thing is the AWD vs. RWD. The Turbo is heavier than the C2, and that, combined with the AWD gives a totally different type of cornering experience. When taking an offramp aggressively, the Turbo feels like it just pulls itself through the turns. Keep the throttle down and it is just on rails. It is easier to get some rear tire slide out of the C2 (admittedly, I haven't even attempted this in the Turbo yet). And both my old car and new one were on the exact same tires (Pilot Super Sports in 235f, 305r). I think the AWD is a better platform for everyday driving, but the RWD would be the preferred platform if one were to track the car.

Looks are subjective, but I really like the looks of the Turbo's hips and rear end. Also, maybe because my current car is white and the old one was a little more stealthy in black, or maybe because there are a lot of people who actually know the difference between the Turbo and the C2, but the Turbo gets twice the attention. People stopping and pointing, or snapping cell phone pics happen more. I especially love when little kids will get excited and wide-eyed, because that was me when I was a kid and would see a cool car. That happened in the C2 as well, but in the short amount of time I have had the Turbo, it happens more.

The Turbo has a seemingly endless list of mods that can be done--only limited by your budget. Everything seems to be 1/3rd more expensive with the Turbo. It's nice having the Mezger and knowing I can achieve 600+ WHP without breaking a sweat, though at the present I have no designs to do that. I will probably get an exhaust at some point for the sound and a bit of a HP boost... but that's all I really want to do. Just an exhaust and conservative tune could net 75+ hp though, and that's crazy.

Finally, there's an extra bit of exclusivity in the Turbo. It's nice driving what was once considered the flagship of the entire Porsche brand, outside of the GT series cars. The MSRP between my two cars when new is a $45K difference and maybe it is in my head, but it feels like an even more upscale car.

So in short, yes, I definitely think the Turbo is the better car... but the C2 (and rest of the 911 lineup, I'm sure) is extremely capable and fun in its own right. All are fantastic vehicles.
