I'm new to the 997,have a '12 GTS.Should my iPod charge when plugged into the iPod slot?Mine isn't charging, didn't know if it's my older ipod model or that's just the deal with the 997.

Which iPod, which cable, old one or new one, for the 30 pin connector.
The newer cable plugs into USB and plug, old one just plugs into plug.
Older iPods some use different charging circuits and need the newer cable, others use the original cable.
Are you just plugging into the USB outlet with the Apple cable?

I'm using the cable I got with the car,it plugs into my old(hard drive) iPod,then splits into a 9 pin plug and a USB.The 9 pin plug in the car is labeled iPod.

As Larrytrk said, my experience with 997.2:
You need the special new Porsche cable which has a Y piece also going into the USB port for 5V charging supply. Apple abandoned the 10 volt connection to the old Firewire setup

Not sure which version of iPod you're using but here's what the PCM manual says is supported:

iPod* mobile digital device
You can connect one of the following iPod models
to your PCM via a jack in the center console of
your vehicle using the connecting cable supplied:
– iPod 4th generation,
– iPod 5th generation (video),
– iPod nano,
– iPod nano 2nd generation,
– iPod mini,
– iPod photo

It should charge if you have both ends of the Y plugged in. The USB is required to provide the power for a charge. It's not 100% clear to me from the earlier posts if you have the USB side plugged in as well.

I was running into this problem originally with my 997.2 and iPod Classic. I do believe that you have the correct cable, the same one I have. Iwould park the car and if it sat for a day or two, the iPod would be dead when returning (I would leave the car unlocked in the garage).

I then started locking the car in the garage and now I have no issues.

See if this resolves the issue.

That cable provides 5VDC for charging to the 30pin connector. If your ipod charges from 5vDC, then it will charge (while the car provides power over the USB port). The older able (round DIN only to 30 pin without the USB y branch) only provided 12vDC charging and only charged much older iPods.

The cables will charge the iPod when the car is on (ignition I assume) - but not when the key is out and removed. There is some indication the iPod being plugged in to the cable may prevent some iDevices form going to sleep (lowpower mode) and as such they might go flat quicker than had they been unplugged. As mentioned by others, the key to letting the iPod go to sleep may well be locking the car or not.
