You are absolutely right. Just pop the little locking clip off, and pull the old one, and the new ones snap right on. No DIY guide needed. Did it myself in about 5 minutes, both sides.

I definitely spent more time THINKING about doing it, and actually getting bonked on the head BEFORE doing it, than how little time it took to actually just fix.

I also had the experience that replacing just one did the job, but heck. I replaced them both and now i'm MORE than confident I won't be getting bonked on the head for a few years at least. Can't believe I've put this simple fix off for as long as i had.

It's actually faster than checking your own oil level. hahahaha

Those Strongarm 4031 struts worked perfectly! I've got the plastic hood shield too and it's no problem at all. Highly recommended as a replacement for stock.

I ran across this as my frunk support are worn and need replacing. I almost went with the Strongarm 4031's so posted. This is what I I found looking into it.

StrongArm 4031 has an extended length of 9.95 and compressed length of 6.81. The StrongArm I found for the 997.1 is StrongArm part number 6528. This has an extended length of 12.38 and compressed length of 8.18. I'll have to measure the stock support(Stabilus-Boge) to compare.

If StrongArm details are correct, the 4031 should be too short and the hood won't open to original height.

Interesting, but if you look at the photos, how vertical do you actually need the hood to be open? I'm 6'1" and it's open plenty far enough with the 4031s where I don't have to worry about bumping my head. Plus the farther up it is, the farther you have to reach to it when closing it, which increases the chance of your leg rubbing the front bumper. What would also be interesting to know since you have the specs on both struts is the strength rating of each. What I liked about the 4031 was it was stronger and made the hood go up more reliably and slightly faster than the OEM ones I removed, and that was even with the additional weight of the Das Schild protective good liner. What I don't know is if they were stronger because the OEM ones were especially worn or just couldn't handle the extra load of the liner.

Hey Pete, I'm just sharing what I found. It's clear your's works and I'm not questioning that. I noticed that the 4031 model is cheaper too so perhaps another reason to go with that? I bonked my head a few times already due to these worn lifters so time to get them swapped out.

How heavy is your liner?

I'll try and measure how high mines opens tonight. Say from tip of frunk to base? I have a handy laser tool for xmas I can use.

Appreciate the info. The strength eating is kind of what I expected. I'm not sure on the weight of the cover, but it's probably a few pounds if I recall of when I installed it a few years ago. I can measure mine too - the old fashioned way with a ruler since Santa didn't bring me a cool laser measured - just let me know what bottom point you used (maybe latch catch opening slot or red release tab) and we can compare.

Based on your photo in post #13, Let's use the sheet metal fold(basically where the base of the latch ends).

The Bosch laser proves to be quite accurate. Though advertised only to 1/8" accuracy, it reports down to 1/16". Based on the difference in extended lengths, 12.38 vs 9.95, I expect the difference in height to be by inches.

In thinking about that 12.38" length number I'm not sure in the closed position there is actually that much available distance between the two ball mounts that the strut attach to. The first time I closed my hood after the install of the 4031s, I did it very slowly and carefully because it looked like I might run out of travel on the polished extending portion of the strut as it closed into the black gas cartridge, like where the black ball end fitting was going to contact the black gas cartridge and not close all the way without bending something, but it made it. Unless the 6528 has an unusually short cartridge part and longer polished part (obviously this can't be too lopsided), I'm not sure 12.38" will fit. Maybe you can check the spacing between the mounts when the frunk is closed when you're doing the other measurements (I'm out of town).

You're looking at the extended length. In closed position, see compressed length(8.18 on 4031, 9.95 on 6528.) Difference is 1.77".

If we can see the head of the bolt from the outside, that can easily be measured. I found multiple hits for model 6528 to fit the 997 so I would imagine that is correct dim.?

Verified why the 4031 work.. the stock front lifters measure as follows;
Extended, 9 1/2". Compressed, about 6 1/2". and it dawned on me, the mix up.. it must be the trunk or rear. I measured our rear engine hatch lifter and it measured to the 6528, 12 5/8 extened and about 8" compressed. So I think there's the mix up.. so frunk confused things here is my guess?

And to confirm, the 4031 frunk lifter extends to the correct height, please compare my height. To the edge I noted to base of frunk, 4'11".

Nice detective work - thanks for solving the mystery. I knew I took the OEM one with me when I was trying to find a suitable, but stronger replacement, and would have been surprised I had selected one that was almost 2" shorter, but that was about 4 year ago, so....
