Sorry not reading the complete thread, but you can rule out a loose emergency-wrench that is used when roof is open and motor fails? But I guess that would be too simple...;-)

I have an intermittent rattle for which I haven't been able to find the source, so after seeing this thread checked and it feels like these are also both broken on my car.... though they aren't the source of my rattle.
