Default 997.2 heater vent settings - QUESTION

On a separate topic on my new acquisition (2012 997.2), I've noticed that when you click solely arrow down to get just the lower heater vents going, that there is still a very small amount of heated air coming through the upper/regular AC vents (without any other arrows being activated or lighting up - such that only air which should come through would be heat via lower vents under dash). I've only had BMWs previously - and on recent 3 series, when set for lower heat only, the upper AC vents always automatically shut off with no air coming through. So on the 997.2, it appears that there is some minor leakage of heated air through upper vents even when set for only lower heater vents - such that you have to manually close the upper vents via vent dials if you want those cleanly and completely shut off? Just wondering if this normal for 997.2 heater settings or if I need to take it to dealer for this issue. Would greatly appreciate any experience or insight on this issue. Thanks!

I have never noticed. I just let it do its thing and feel comfortable. I will say that I usually dont drive it when there is snow or ice on the ground.

There is a very small % of air that is still channeled through the top vents when the setting is on bottom vents only. Other vehicles I've owned would shut the other vents completely but the Porsche does not. Not sure if it's a design flaw or some reason for the same.

Honestly, it does not bother me as the airflow is unnoticible in this situation.

Yes this is my observation also.

Yesterday driving for an hour in the snow home from work it was 9F outside, I just left the auto heat set at 72F inside without changing arrows (no arrows selected) and was very comfortable. At one point I did need to hit the front window defroster, but that was for the window icing not for my "upper body"comfort.

I have add other vehicles which do exactly the same, the majority of air is directed as selected, but a small amount still comes out the other vents. I'm guessing that some auto manufacturers believe this is a better or more comfortable way of controlling the cabin climate.

Yup, mine does the same thing as does my 2001 Lexus GS430. The Lexus stops the flow from the center vents and still has slight air flow from the outer vents.

In a Lexus the outer dash vents can only be closed to outflow manually.

I keep them firmly closed during the window months.

What are the window months? Did you mean winter months? The window months are the winter months here in northern south central eastern west Florida. 10 to 20 cold days and then it's all over, back to windows up and blasting AC

It is a safety feature. It has been my understanding that this helps prevent the side windows from fogging, especially in the area where the side-view mirror is visible through the glass. Some of my cars have had specific slots in the side vent that point onto the glass regardless of where I point the rest of it, reinforcing that this is probably the case.
