Find a speed trap shooting laser and drive by going really fast!

Agreed. The only valid test is to drive it in anger. When you find a speed check, get a hit signal, have time to react and feel you would normally have been pulled over.. then you can have some confidence its working. If you get pulled over anyway, well then you know its not.

The use of laser is rare here in my experience. Almost every cop seems to use the standard radar, though the more astute ones use the instant-on feature that makes it harder to react. I've only been targeted once or twice by laser (very unique sound on my passport) and it was a Phoenix motorcycle cop both times. The laser is so fast that honestly it is a useless part of the detector because it is too late if you are his bogey. Luckily for me I was not ticketed on my laser detection occasions.

When you get lit up slow as usual but go around to the same spot really fast and see if you get a ticket.

I get a false alerts more often than I would expect. Usually on Pima heading North in the early evening. I wonder if its the angle of the sun?
