PCM 3.0 backup camera options?
Now that a bunch of time has passed since the car's intro, I'm wondering...
Is there a reasonable solution one can purchase to add a backup camera on the license plate frame that will display the video image on the PCM screen for a 997.2 with PCM 3.0 ?

Anyone? I have a 2012 cab and backing up is a nightmare. Don't want to do any non dealer installed things as that always leads to problems, warranty etc down the road. But I need a backup camera!

I have an 2011 cab. I take down the top when visibility is difficult. Backing and parking are made easy by just doing that. Also, turn the side-mirror control **** fully clockwise. When in reverse gear, the right mirror will dip down to show the curb.

I have access to better pricing on NAV-TV products but have never personally installed this kit so have no direct experience with it.

The word on the news recently was backup cameras will be required on all cars sold in the US. If low volume doesn't get an exemption, then I'd expect a Porsche solution to be available on US cars. Which means of course, that Porsche 'parts' will be available for retrofitting to older cars, so long as Porsche doesn't do the porsche-thing and make the camera a smart device that needs to be activated by secret code via PIWIS. From what I understand, the PCM3 has video capability - as it is available in other parts of the planet with such functionality, its just interfacing the right type of parts thats the trick.
Since cameras naturally output RGB and have electronics to convert that to composite, I'd think it would be easy for a camera supplier to provide RGB signal out easily enough.
So the wait goes on.

The intention of adding an extra level of precautions is good, but this undoubtedly will be abused as the only precaution. I predict many careless folks won't bother checking the environment anymore because the camera's got them covered.

I have back up cameras in other cars and I find myself looking in the mirrors way more often. I feel that I can see more with the mirrors than the camera (other than right behind the rear). As mentioned above way too many people will just look at the camera and think all is clear and the will back out into traffic.

Minok - I looked into this in more detail. Here's the problem. The PCM 3 in the 911 is missing the internal RGB input board that exists in the Cayenne. The NAV-TV solution actually provides this input board. You have to open up the PCM and add this board which connects via a ribbon cable.
Probably not a very do-it-yourself friendly operation.
If it's a major concern you could probably get one of the rear view mirrors that has the built in LCD screen.
