Default PDK Software Upgrade to 991 Specs??

Anyone know of a way to get the 997.2 PDK to shift like the 991? Test drove a 991s and the PDK was much improved over my 997.2 with sport chrono.

Upshifts and and downshifts were significantly faster, thanks.

As it now stands there is no upgrade path. The new PDK has internal modifications to go along with the software.

You mean Porsche has made improvements to something, leaving buyers of its previous models wanting to "move up?"

I'm shocked, frankly. Shocked.

Having not driven a 991, I don't have a direct comparison.

I can say that I'm very pleased with my 997.2 pdk. It's lame in regular mode, but helps the car get decent mpg.
In Sport mode, the shifts are very crisp and immediate. If the new tranny shifts faster, quantify that - maybe .05 seconds?
Sport Plus - the shifts are borderline violent.

The pdk is going to change it s characteristics based on how you drive anyway. Want a new tranny? Disconnect the battery for a 1/2 hour, then reconnect it. Wa la new tranny!

Thanks for the info Alan. That's what I wanted to know, whether there were improvements to the software alone or in addition to the PDK unit itself.

I don't like everything about the 991, really just the speed on the shifts. Car is more refined and does feel more neutral from the longer wheelbase, wider front track, and the the engine placement.

Drive one and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. The most impressive part is the downshifts in manual mode. The 997.2 downshifts are lazy and wimpy. The 991 PDK has the excitement of an f1 style trans on downshifts.

I completely agree. Still love my car, though.

After testing a 991 I went looking for PDK software updates. Everyone said couldn't be done, doesn't exist, or that there was no diff b/w the 991 and 997 PDK.

I considered trading my 997.2 for a 991 but didn't like the electric steering and some other things so I decided to hold out as I knew it was just a matter of time before some aftermarket company would address it.

Looking across the web I came across a Florida company known as 1016 Industries. They do software tunes and are well received for their R8 R-Tronic software.

I contacted them and inquired if they had one for the 997.2 PDK. They in fact did. I bought the software and loaded it. Very easy install, software comes on a writer that is plugged into the OBDII port. Took about 5 min.

All I can say is WOW. The software completely transformed the car. 1016 Industries (Peter) states shifts are 19% faster and it definitely is. Upshifts/downshifts are much faster, crisp and aggressive. Overall the update has made the car more immediate and importantly satisfying to drive. The delay bw pulling the paddle and the car shifting has been minimized

Still not as 991 fast but a huge improvement nonetheless. Shifts are fast but also have some feel to them. They don't feel so sanitized as the 991.

Definitely keeping the 997.2 for some time. Been enjoying it a lot lately and really look forward to driving it every chance I get. Couldn't say the same before the PDK update.

Here is video of the car after the software was loaded. Car is in Sport Plus mode:

I suggest getting professional timing instrumentation and actually measuring shift times for both the 997.2 and 991 before stating that the 991 shifts are faster. Yeah, they may 'sound' faster as a result of the Symposer's psychoacoustic effect.

Any idea how this will affect the warranty on the car if there is one? I'm asking since I recently had a $12,000 PDK replacement covered by warranty.

Why would I go through the trouble of proving something that is so obvious?

I understand some are skeptical of the differences in PDK calibration for the 991 vs the 997. At the same time I also understand some individuals are simply unable to perceive these changes.

But I ask why is it so difficult to accept the 991 PDK is faster and more responsive?

On what basis is it obvious? Subjectively quicker maybe, but objectively only a measurement will show. The Symposer plays tricks on people's perceptions. But… if you think otherwise enjoy the placebo.
