I found the engine number despite not having the car.

#: 68617013

Prod. date: 4/06

I think your calculations are spot on.

IslandS, this one doesn't make sense with the rest of my data. Maybe x51 engines have a separate numbering system? Reading your number, you'd be the 40,929th engine in 2006. But they don't make that many M97 engines in a year...let alone by February (8 months into their production year).

I have a 2006 C2 with an M96 engine, build date Sept, 2005. How can I find out if I have the updated bearings?

The April 2010 issue of Excellence had the engine numbers with the bearing type. But I can't find my copy.

I'll x2 check it, but it's what is on my documentation from the dealer.

Maybe the x51 makes a difference. I'm not sure how to decode your engine number, but it's definitely an outlier compared to the rest of my data, which falls on a stick-straight line. Use your favorite graphing program and chart it for yourself...

Engine # (686...) -- Build date
03833 -- 08/2005
06852 -- 10/2005
08774 -- 11/2005
14009 -- 02/2006
16022 -- 03/2006
16946 -- 03/2006
17013 -- 04/2006
21288 -- 05/2006

So, what's the consenus now? If build date is 2006, it's got upgraded IMS?

"To determine if your M97 engine has the improved IMS, you will need to check your engine number.
if the engine number is 68509790 and below, unfortunately it still has the smaller removable IMS bearing.
if the engine number is 68509791 and above, it will have the new large single row IMS. The IMS cover also has the 22mm nut.";
If this is what your hunt is based on, I believe you are asking the wrong group of 997 owners. I think you will find that all MY06 M97 engines, even those built in 2005, will start with 686, not 685. So to find the the approx. month the change was made, you really should be asking MY05 owners, not MY06.

Pay attention.

He does want to hear from '05 owners.
