Default vaseline on wheels

been reading a lot about brake dust nowadays. oiur cars put out so much of the stuff. fact of life. but i never really did have any problems cleaning them. I read somewhere that petroleum jelly works. i did this when the car was new. really do not know it this was thing that worked but i do not have problems cleaning brake dust off even with just water!! i made a cleaning tool: bamboo stick with a thick sponge in the end. reaches up to the end of the rear wheels. just water removes the brake dust. after loosening, i use a strong stream of water to remove the loose dust...never really used any wax as i feel the heat just melts it away too.

Use Rejex on the wheels.

The vaseline on the wheel trick went out with the 1989 cars. (It was useful for the Fuchs alloy finishes). Rejex, like cvazquez suggests, is very popular.

Won't the Vaseline attract and hold onto more brake dust?

Some genius out there is going to make a fortune developing a new brake pad material, works just as well as current, at the same price and longevity, with no appreciable dust.

You don't want to get that on your tires.

I believe my owners manuals on my older 911s with the Fuchs wheels said the use of Vaseline on the wheels was to prevent corrosion and pitting of the wheel from the brake dust, and not to make it easy to remove brake dust. I never used it on mine because it did attract brake dust and road dust. It was to be applied to the outer rim of the wheel and not the spokes, if I recall correctly.

As mentioned by others, I tried petroleum jelly on the Fuchs wheels on my '84 Carrera. It was supposed to help prevent corrosion and also leave a nice patina on the black centers especially, which weren't clear coated as wheels are today. You rubbed it in then wiped it off. Thing is, the inevitable residue attracted brake dust and dirt and it turned out that simple waxing worked better for me.

A detail guy recommended this product many years ago-I still use it and it works very well.
