Which 997 variant would be the next 993?
Since reading the in-depth technical details posted on 991 forum (by 911slow), it is very clear to me that 997 is basically the new 993.
There are many reasons but basically people who look for unassisted *auto steering*, raw horsepower with no non-sense electronics, a car that they can actually WORK on its engine and do maintenacne themselves, a 911 that actually can TURN its hips, and a car that has a simple yet functional interior and comfort features would look no further than 997!
I am not saying that 997 values won't go down, or it will be an investment like 993s have been (mostly due to the sheer number built), but it will definitely be a model that will be in hot demand when all other cars around are either hyrbird, or battery powered with FLUFF all around em!
The question is, WHICH variant of 997 will be valued the most, cherished for in the future?

But seriously, it must be the special edition and lower production number lines, such as GT3 RS, Turbo S, or similar models.

new 993 - it is funny. no 997 car will ever be a 993 as there are way too many of them, they are not collectables, they are utility.
GTS car will hold value very well.
current 997.2 gt3 rs car is awesome too. how good 4 liter engine will show itself on heavily tracked cars nobody knows yet.
997 cup cars are very good too.

No doubt the lower production models will hold their value better over time, as is the case with most previous production Porsches, or any other car for that matter. But the basic assumption of this thread that, because the 991 is allegedly an extreme evolution of the 911 platform, the 997 will become iconic in the way that the last of the air cooled cars did, is way off base, IMO.

Tend to agree that the 993 will remain a standout for its design, (just as Selma Hayek does for hers) I think the closest porsche has come to it since is the 997 C2 with 19in wheels. Why? (1) my car (2) part of the 993's appeal is simple yet substantial block of sculpture. It is sensual like a Brancusi. The other part of its appeal (to me) is the raw mechanical feel of it. the combination of these features makes it unique. The 997 doesn't present these virtues quite as well or uniquely but it does share the strongest family resemblence of any car since. just my .02

Alex hit the nail on the head and its what I've been saying over and over.
The 993 is very desirable because of it's shape which is classic 911 and it's the last generation to be air cooled.
996 first model year will be desirable one day as it is the first year of the new generation water cooled.
997.1 and 997.2 will be desirable for the reasons Alex set forth as will 996's.
997 variants of "limited production" or which were made in limited numbers (i.e. GT3 variants, Speedster, GTS's) will be even more desirable and the most desireable 997s of the last generation before a MAJOR evolution.
I'm not knocking the 991. It will be and I hope it will be a spectacular car to carry the Porsche banner into the future but it has taken a huge step away from the classic 911 character traits and look. 911s were traditionally short wheelbase, upright, high horsepower little German sports cars with the engine hanging off the rear resulting in it's very own handling traits and character which we are all familar with. The interior of the 991 is now a Panamera interior and is no longer distinct from it.
The new 991 has erradicated those 911 traits for better or worse depending on your view. It's a new world.
So, yes the 997 especially the more limited production/produced 997s will be the "993s" of the future in the figurative sense not the literal sense since a 993 is a 993.
It's exactly what I've been saying.
I'm am however likely to target the 991 GT3 for the track but I'm keeping the GTS. It's a future classic IMHO.

the lowest production number 997 variant is the 911 club coupe, only 50 made in the world. Basically a 997C2S with X51 powerkit and a unique Azurro California blue color. I don't think it will hold value better than a CT3/RS variant, but it is the rarest. I got the only one in my province. It is my collector car.
