Default Battery replacement

Stealer wants to charge $500+ to replace battery.

Seems ridiculously expensive.

What am I missing? Cant I just go buy one at the auto parts store and replace it myself?

Suggestions please

They are charging you an hour and a half labor for something you can do in 20 minutes and $300 for a battery that costs them half that amount.

Yes, you can go to the auto parts store and buy one. I bought mine at Autozone. Somewhere around $100.

Yes you can replace it yourself ~$100.00. Take your old battery with you to get the correct size (width and length). So parts places have the wrong size in their system.

Tell the dealership you want to upgrade to a lightweight Li-Ion battery, and give them your CC #.

Interstate sells a good one. Also check out WalMart, or places like AutoZone.

Second the autozone and walmart suggestion. Don't let the brand snobs convince you OEM is better.

And buy a Porsche battery maintainer for about $47 from places like Sunset, and your new battery will last a L O N G time. If not being driven, be plugged in.

The correct battery size is a 94R. Wal-mart has a great price on them. Wal-mart battery made by Johnson Controls with 3yr replacement/9yr prorate warranty. As noted above, do not go with that a parts counter tells you. They list a size 49 battery, which is about 2" longer. It will fit in the battery tray, but the stock clamp won't work without modification. The 94R is a direct fit replacement, including the vent (may have to use the elbow from the stock battery).

Wal-mart calls it the Max-94R and I think sells for about $100. Many here including myself have used this battery

Completely agree with others - go to Interstate, Walmart or similar. I put an Interstate in my 997S. You can do it yourself in 10 minutes. And be careful on the size, I don't remember my model # but at first glance in the spec book they would have given me the wrong size.

The Interstate battery may be the MTP-91. I have this in the Turbo. Costco has great prices on Interstate batteries. The gas station charges about $130. Costco <$90 for the same.

Wear rubber gloves and eye protection.

And since we just saved you over $300, use some of that savings to join Rennlist as a member.

The only problem is that you will loose all the "stored" info
I bought an adapter the takes a 9 v battery, plugs into the cigarette lighter, I don't remember if the lighter is live all the time, so check if the key must be on.

Proper interstate battery is actually the H7. MTP-91 or MTP-93 have been used by others and should fit, but the H7 is the best fit. Make is has the proper vent

What specifically will be lost? I've read some other threads on battery replacement, but dont see a list of lost info. It looks like warning lights and windows will self correct. Radio stations and date/time can be easily reset. What else will be lost?

On a 997, I don't think much. A TIP may loose some of it's learned shift knowledge. You may get a PSM warning, but that will go away with a couple blocks.

I swapped stock one out for Interstate - no mileage limitation (Porsche mandates 6k miles a year minimum to maintain warranty on battery). I had a DEAD CELL on my '09 Turbo at one year, and Porsche said nope because I only had about 3500 miles on the clock. F'em. Got a great deal on an Interstate AT MY DEALER for a sweet price, and got a deal on the Porsche trickler too.
