Great job USMC_DS1 and thanks for your service to our country.

My 2009 997.2S takes exactly 8 quarts on a refill - the series 2 engine is a bit different from the 997.1 and apparently takes less oil.

Not to threadcrap, but for the diy'ers you can get the OEM Mann variant oil filter and seal for 7.67 plus shipping at rockauto. They have quite a good bit of parts for our cars

Thanks Dgrayling... it was an honor to serve. My older boy is continuing the family tradition. He just rec'd his NROTC contract with Marine Corps and will be going to OCS next summer.

A comment on the different 997.2 Oil Filter for the DFI engine. It requires a 36 mm socket to remove the filter housing cap. Located on the top of the engine makes this super easy to access and it's orientation makes it easy to change without spilling oil while replacing the filter. One thing I did notice is that a large puddle of old oil settles in the rear portion of the bottom of the housing. I was 1st tempted to grab a rag and soak the hot oil out. Then I thought of the risks of contaminating that area with dirt, lint or other debris so i decided to use a syringe to extract the old oil (same one I used to remove old brake fluid from the resevoir last week).

This was the easiest oil change ever. I wasn't able to get my oil drain pan under the car and still have room to remove the oil drain plug as others mentioned as my garage and driveway are flat. I was able to use 2 jacks at the rear to lift the car up but did not need to make the wheels come off the ground. Just a few inches of suspension travel used to give me a little more room to work. I have long arms so I only stuck my arm under the car (if jacks failed nothing would get crushed the way I was working....Disclaimer...if you put any part of your body under the car far enough that would get pinched if jacks failed you must use jack stands)

When installing the new oil filter I found it much easier to place the filter on the engine portion of the filter housing 1st. It took firm pressure to get the filter to seat then I screwed on the filter housing cap. Torque spec for the cap was conviently written on the cap (those Porsche designers think of all the details).

When adding oil I just realized that the oil filler cap with built in extension tube funnel has a 2nd phase of extension if you pull a little harder.

So for those with 997.2 add 36mm socket to your tool list (and optional turkey baster or syringe is you want to get that puddle of dirty oil out of your filter housing)

Jeff, thanks for posting the DIY details for the 997.2 and good job... BTW, I used a cement mixing tub from Home Depot. It's low enough to slide underneath the car and still have enough room to reach the oil filter on the 997.1 w/o having to jack up the car. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...N#.UEklg5a8pMQ

Great writeups, I was right around 9 quarts myself when I changed mine over the weekend. Although the nearby dealership (Niello) does them for $125 for PCA members, I like to take every opportunity I can to spend time in the garage.

Excellent Insomnic! Sounds like you drained it properly/completely. BTW, that's a great price for a p-dealer oil change but I'm with you... it's much more satisfying to spend some quality mech time with our p-car plus I doubt the p-dealer would expend the time required to drain the oil completely like you did.

Indeed, Mann is made in Germany as opposed to Mahle which comes from Mexico. May or may not be a big deal. Mann appears to be better quality compared to Mahle. In particular the end flanges are rubber vs paper. The filtration element is the same, I believe.
However, both LN and Flat 6 recommend Wix / Napa Gold filter #: 57211 (insert for the stock cartridge) which happens to have some 25-30% better filtration and can reduce insolubles in UOA.
I recently bought some of them for about the same price. Can't remember where I got them from any more. Getting older....
BTW:
I also use two canisters, one is always on stand by. Gives me more time to properly clean the one that just got removed from the car.
Cheers,
=L=

I used 8.5 quarts on the DFI motor. That was with a really hot motor and letting it drain over half an hour and sucking out the pool of oil in the bottom of the oil filter housing.

Do you now have to re-set your maintenance reminder ? and is there a special tool for this job.

That's unheard of!!! 9 quarts of M1 synthetic from your local parts store and a filter will set you back almost that much

Does the magnetic plug fit the 997 gen 1 as well?

DrDrank,

The 997.2GT3RS and possibly the Turbo has a completely different engine (Mezgar instead of the M97 or 9A1 of the 997 series). In the RS and Turbo (pre-2011) there is a holding oil tank to the right of the sump drain plug which is at a 90 degree angle from the regular 997 engine's plug. The Mezgar engine is a true dry-sump system and has the majority of oil in the separate holding tank. Total oil capacity refill is 9 qts.
