Default Water pump failure..........how mine got identified

I thought I'd post a quick message regarding my water pump failure so that hopefully it will help others in the future. My car is an 06 C2S cab with 30K miles on it. Like a lot of us here, I'm very sensitive to the way the car drives, sounds, feels, etc. I always listen to the idle for a few seconds before turning the car off, and last night I hear a faint "rasping" sound that was intermittent (every 1 second or so) that sounded like it was coming from the driver's side of the engine. Anyway, I didn't have time to get under the car or do my usual "where's that noise coming from" inspection, so since I was flying out on a trip early this morning I dropped it off at the dealer for them to take a look at. The shop manager comes out, sticks his head in to take a look at the water pump pulley and sure enough there is about 2-3 mm of play in the pulley............water pump is toast. The amazing thing is that even with this much play, no leaks! As a side note, I can't say enough good things about Porsche of Norwell (Boston S. Shore). So my advice from this event is listen to your idle every so often for any strange noises (other than the normal Porsche strange noises)........you might catch you water pump before a failure on the road.
By the way.................any idea what a dealer cost for a water pump replacement might be based on others who've had this done?

Mine failed at 50,571 miles. I noticed that the water temperature crept up above the normal 175 when sat in traffic and would return to 175 once moving. No leaks were visible.

Based on prior member postings... I've seen p-dealers charge anywhere from $1K to $1,800. Spokane, Fiat, and I replaced the WP ourselves... very doable as a DIY project. I replaced my WP pre-emptively as I approached 50K miles even though my car is still under CPO. Let us know how much your dealer charges. That would be informative to others.

Op.
Thanks for the tip, keep us updated.
Fiat Coupe,
Your car normally runs at 175 even in Texas? I don't even drive it over 4k before it hits 200. During summer mine will creep to 215/220 while sitting in traffic.
Is mine high or yours low>

Are you perhaps thinking about oil temp? Water temp is _always_ at 175 in my car in even the hottest conditions. Oil temp, on the other hand, is typically around 220 under everyday loads, if I recall correctly.

Since I installed my 3rd radiator I hover around 200F on the oil temp.

Yeah, I think he's posting the oil temp. Mine behaves just like yours; water temp reaches 175 fairly quickly and after a few more miles the oil temp settles anywhere from 210-220. The only difference is if its very cold out, it will settle just under 200.

My water pump on my '07 Targa 4 failed at 64K. The fan belt slipped off the pully. As I checked the belt, I discovered the pully was really loose. I had the car towed to the nearest dealer. No leakes to tip me off too. The replacement was $1200 which all but $100 was covered by my extended warranty. The warranty even covered the flat bed tow cost!!

Well, I posted a question about jackstands and thought this avatar would be funny since the Jackpoints don't go up high enough in my opinion. The girl in the avatar is using Jackpoint stands. LOL

Water pump failure at 30K-50K miles is very premature. Not good, this part should last at least 90-100K miles.
