Straightening wheel
Driving home a week ago in the dark, I hit a brick that was on the road! Yes a brick! I took my car (997 C2S) to a tire shop as I found my car was shaking a little at high speed, found out that my front left wheel is slightly bent. Anyone have any experience with these wheel shops that offer wheel straightening? It cost about ~$100 to straighten, so they say... It is better than $600+ for a new/used wheel.

I think you'l find that that process can be effective. I feel for you--our roads are cluttered with so much crap!! Recently I was in one of my other vehicles and was able to straddle and go directly over a significant ladder in the middle of the freeway. If I had been in the Porsche--it would have cost thousands to fix.

Never had a wheel straightened and not really sure how they do it. I'd be concerned with added weight to the wheel and the wheels integrity.
Like Edgy...Isee so much crap on the roads today. In my SUV I've gone through 3...yes 3 windshields in 8 months due to crap flying off of trucks and a gravel truck flinging rocks when it passed me as I was exiting I-75.

Cast wheels can be straightened assuming the rim only is bent. It is a good sign if the tire held air. A forged wheel should be replaced as the heat they use to bend it destroys the factory temper and weakens the wheel. I would go with the dealers recommendation for this. There are a lot of guys out there who don't know what they are doing and a good repaint can cover a multitude of sins.

Ive had many straightened. It depends on if the outer finish is scratched or not as to what you will have to do to it to get it back perfect. If it is not scratched, to heat it and "hammer" it out is about 100-125$
You have to take the tire off and ship it somewhere. If you have to repaint, or polish or rechrome, its more.
I have used Glenns Wheel Polishing here in tampa. He is one of the best.

It can be straightened as long as there are no small cracks. Our OEM wheels are pleasure to work on compare to many aftermarket ones. Usually there is a bend or two on internal weak not spoke side.
It takes about an hour, heat gun, delicate press, and years of experience...$95-$135 +tire work (Boston).

I don't blame the ladders for jumping out of the trucks onto the highways.....have you seen the size of some of the people on these ladders, major abuse?

I would be very surprised if the above does *not* apply to the wheels on the 997 MYs.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Forged wheels routinely bend when impacted like that. Cast wheels simply fracture. The OP described the problem as slightly bent. If it is so slightly bent that it can be straightened it may not even need heating. It just depends upon the extent of the damage.

I've had my share of dings, dents, scrapes, scratches, cracks over the years from [censored] left in the road. That's the primary reason why I purchased wheel/tire insurance when I bought my 997 last June.

The shop told me the wheel is slightly bent, supposedly when he was trying to balance it on the machine. It is an original 997 C2S 19in wheel. I believe it is cast?
