Default m96 or m97 - help to identify numbering please

please, anyone who knows for sure - could you give me here a detailed explanation on this topic as I am finally quite puzzled - are 3.6L engines in 997.1 cars still exactly same M96 engines as in 996 cars or are they actually 3.6L M97 engines?
I was under assumption all M97 engines are 3.8L ones. Then I was told it is not so. What is true?

My PPI shows engine number 69611333, engine type 2585, but then on final page in engine type it says M9605. So i was told M9605 is actually a M97. how come? Which is what there? Car is '06 997 C2.

Also, about transmissions - are transmissions in 3.6L and 3.8L cars exactly same or not? what is an exact internal number for those? G9701?

Yours has the 3.6L M96 engine with lots of improvements. Main ones are, stronger IMS supposedly plus improved block webbing for strength. Not sure about tranny.

I'm going from Grant Neal's book "Ulitimate Buyers' Guide - 997" and it seems your engine number 69611333 would decode as follows: the first digit "6" refers to the number of cylinders, the second digit "9" is the engine type (in this case 9 for the Carrera, and 8 for the Carrera S ), the third digit "6" refers to the year made (2006) and the last 5 digits, 11333, are your individual engine serial number.

Neal does not specifically mention if all M97 engines are the 3.8, but he does provide a table of all engine types in 997s from 2005 to 2007. In that table the Carrera with the 3.6 has M96.05 from '05 to '07, whereas the Carrera S has M97.01 for the same years, so I suspect M97 does indeed refer to the 3.8 S, and M96 is the 3.6 - perhaps the "M96.05" implies the fifth variation of the M96 engine.

As for transmissions, it seems all rear-wheel drive Carreras (S or otherwise) received the same G97.01 transmission from '05 to '07. The G97.01 was apparently developed for the up-rated S, but used in the Carrera as well.

M97s come in many displacements (3.8, 3.6, 3.4 etc). The M97 is an evolution of the M96 with (most notably) a revised (larger) IMS bearing. The M97 was installed in each of the model lines (Cayman/Boxster/911) just as the M96 was installed in earlier Boxsters and 911s. Early 997s and Boxsters came with M96 engines. The M97 was phased into the later cars. I've yet to hear of a confirmed date. It appears from your serial number that you have a M96.

Cheers,
Joe
