Default Gear Ratios?

I have had my 997S for about three years now and I understand more about the 911 than I ever had. However there is a topic that I hope for those who have the experience, isn't too mudane for you to explain. What do the numbers actually stand for when you are reading a gear ratio? Two, what advantage would it be to have a taller or shorter gear at a particular rpm in a specific gear, performance wise? Although I have a tiptronic, and I love the performance I get especially with the Revo upgrade and other mods that I've done, I have listed the Manual gear ratios being that most here on the board have them.
Can some one finally then explain how these numbers become involved as you progress from 1st through 6th and how the final drive ratio was arrived at?

Thanks again for your time. I would love to be driving my baby, but right now here in New England after that last storm I don't anticipate much driving soon and thought it was time to post what I thought was a good question.
