Default Will I destroy my steering wheel?

I'm trying to replace a defective turn signal box on my 996.

Looked at the you tube video - piece of cake, even for someone who, although handy with tools, is not a mechanic.

Step 1 blithely states "remove 2 nuts on either side of wheel hub using a Torx 30 bit. I have been trying to get these off for 2 days. I finally got one off accompanied by a loud "snapping" sound, but it took repeated tries with a lot of leverage on a socket wrench to get there (I'm 250 lbs and pretty strong). I thought i had snapped the bolt, but it came out OK.

The other one is till giving me fits. Does anyone know if these bolts have threadlok on them? Could that have been the loud snap I heard when the first one broke free?

I have tried heating the Torx 30 to red hot and inserting into the bolt, hoping to break something free, but so far still REALLY tight!

Please - does anyone out there with experience have any idea how to break these free. Do you think I can snap the bolt if I keep trying? Bolt is M6x10.5.

Thanks

That's some good thread locker! Try tapping on it with a hammer? Long shot.

I'm with Dave, sometimes a bit of "impact" will take it right out. I love my Craftsman right angle impact..fits in tight places (it's really quite small) not a strong impact by any stretch but sometimes just enough!

You could try putting the one you just took out back in to even out any stress. I hate doing that with difficult bolts but sometimes it pays off.

They do make a snapping sound when they break free. My experience has been just to push as hard as you can until you hear the snap release. Keep force on the bolt to reduce the chance of stripping, as that would be a nightmare....I would try a pipe on the end of the ratchet for more leverage.

Thanks all for the responses.

Decided to let it alone for a day or two, and when I tried again I was able to free it -by breaking the bolt halfway into the thread.

There is indeed blue loktite on these bolts, which accounts for how difficult it can be to remove them.
Heat is the only way to "release" loktite and so really the only way to apply heat is to heat the torx tool until red hot and stick it in the bolt head and hold it for a while.

Drilled out the broken bolt and all is well, but what a pain.

Or a fine tip soldering iron.
