Keeping my 996tt as opposed to getting 997tt
I acquired my 996tt w 6 speed about 4.5 yrs ago. Car has performed solidly, had to have a coolant hose fixed(dropped engine to repair, costly) 2diverter valves and routine maintaince. Not bad considering this is my dd essentially. W the hype of the last generation mezger engine being a 997tt , I thought I would upgrade mine to a 2009. I have been softly searching for the right car....well my friend just grabbed a 2009 tt 6speed w cpo warranty. I drove his, was nice but I really enjoy the way mine drove better. The road feel, the cabin being a little smaller the overall sense of the car. His clearly was nicer inside and the Bluetooth was great but that was not enough to really convince me to sell and get a 997. In short I feel his had more "bells and whistles" but was not that much better in driving feel. I realize there is a premium for a well sorted 2009( and I was prepared to pay) however I'm really happy w the 996. It's good for my wallet. My feeling reiterates what many have said, these cars are great bargains and will continue to rise in value. I hope to have mine for a long time to come unless the market on these go like the 993's.

Burning Brakes
Had a 01 6TT, then 07 GT3, and now 02 WC TT-
The Turbo isn't as smooth or refined as the GT3, but for the price and performance very hard to beat. 997 GT2 for the WIN, but way too expensive now.

I added a GT3 console delete and Bluetooth, and I like my interior better than the one in the 997. I don't quite get how everyone says the 997 interior is so much better, and I think the consensus + market will change over time.

I think keeping the 996t and making the jump to a 991tt would be a real difference in car vs. considering the 997t as an upgrade. Interior is just not enough reason to switch and I'm so far into mine that only a really different car would satisfy me.
A 997.2tts like below would be cool, but then you're close to 991 cost.

IMO, 996t to 997t, not a "revolution" more a small increment in refinement. for +~30k more then a 996t, imo -not sure if justified - pending on what you plan to use it.

I totally believe the 996 is the best bang and to simply go to the 997 isn't enough of a leap in any way to spend the extra 30k. Just my two cents. And my 996 spanks my buddies 997 anytime we're on a good stretch together... lol

I think w time the market will come to realize what a great car the 996tt is. As F1 mentioned the change to 997 is not revolutionary. I prefer a manual so i have never been interested in the 991.

^ ( there's a MT 991!?.... )
but agree the swap into 997tt isnt *different* enough to justify, unless one simply wants "newer"..
the jump to make for me is into the 991.2 c2S and keep the 996 tt since it isnt worth selling lol and i'd miss it too much anyway!.
but the 991.2 c2s makes much the same power yet with all of the refinements/improvements over a stock k16 996TT that one would expect from a 15 years "newer" 911. add to that all of the creature comforts ( what of them 911's have ) which might well make it the perfect 911 DD! ( for me anyway..)
not so sure i'd need the rear wheel steering option! but i haven't driven it.. yet.

Three Wheelin'
996TT vs 997TT (and Cayman S)
I have both a 996 and 997 TT in the garage right now. Both 6 speed MT - both lowered - both with 19" Turbo wheels - (both with 4" eRam kits, heh heh).
Here is my impression: The 6T is more visceral and tactile, providing tons of feedback - the short shifter is a dream. The 7T is comfortable and dare I say, mundane. Sport chrono, doesn't really do much for me - and PASM transmits all road bumps into the cabin, maybe it will be better on the track. However, the PCCB's of the 7T are FAR superior to any other brakes I've ever had. The interior of the 7T is nearly the same as my '09 Cayman S, so no big deal about the interior being so great and such a big update. In fact, both the 7T and CS annoy me with the console square top grinding into the outside of my right leg just below the knee (sort of like those stupid hard square airplane seat arm rests). The 7T (and CS) have much better seats, much more comfortable. I cannot get the seat position right in my 6T. I look at the 6T interior and wonder how so many critics think it is outdated... as opposed to WHAT? I laugh when these critics say, "it used the same parts as a Boxster"... as does the 7T with the Cayman S. My favorite? The 996TT for seat of the pants feel and connectedness to the road. The 7T for exterior appearance, seating and the PCCB gen II brakes, I put it just a notch above the 5th gen Turbo IMHO. That said, I just can't bring myself to think about parting with any of the 3, as I really have 2 too many...

I think it's interesting you like the 997tt seats over the 996tt seats. I absolutely flat out prefer the 996 seats to the rock hard units found in the 997. When it comes to comfort for me the 996 seats are hands down the better seat.

Well, I swapped out the OEM head unit for an aftermarket unit, since I was deleting my PCM to retrofit a single-DIN unit (again, because the GT3 console delete is the best thing ever), and I couldn't find the OEM Becker CR/CDR-220 for a reasonable price.
Here is the "OEM-style" solution I found. I believe the seller is a member on here, and he also sells the little harness to make it all plug-and-play:

However, if you have the OEM Becker, you have a few options to retrofit Bluetooth. I think Dave who just posted above recently came out with a solution , and I think Becker themselves also offers a solution. I can see they have a refurbished unit here for sale that includes Bluetooth:

[EDIT] Here's the BT module itself: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-St...3D252324804051
Thanks for chiming in since you own both. The bolded is why I recommend the GT3 center console delete (Function-First's console looks pretty cool too).
Lousy pic but you get the idea:
Sorry to hijack and go on and on about the console delete, but the ability to delete the center console is absolutely one of my favorite things about the 996 vs. the 997. The extra legroom is fantastic, even if you're not super tall, and it looks more like a classic 911. And since our TT's have full leather, there is a beautiful swath of leather normally hidden by the console there.

The interior of the 7T is exactly the same as my '09 Cayman S, so no big deal about the interior being so great and such a big update. Money no object, I'd love to have a 997 GT2 look alike turbo, and the 7 interior is more to my taste, clean modern lines. That being said those things are not worth the 30k+ difference in price, especially when I love driving my car every single time I get into it.

To clarify I meant no 991tt w manual, maybe Porsche will have one in the future.
Dave , well put comparison of the two. Who did the detailing on your 997tt, the clarity is amazing

Perhaps we have different opinions on what "exactly the same" means.
The 996 interior comes from the same period as the late 90s ford taurus. All those organic ovals look dated as hell and cheap.
