2nd Gear Popout (UK REBUILD)
Hi all,
I recently bought a 996tt and have experienced the popout on a number of occasions now. Im hopeful that the Gbox detent will sort the issue but a bit worried that the 1st 2nd might need an overhaul Gbox out. It doesn't feel great (rough) when engaging.
I had PPI done and it wasn't picked up which is rather frustrating to say the least.
Has anyone uk based had a rebuild done what kind of money would I be looking at?
many thanks all

the detent won't cure the popout. it will only help to help to prevent it, in an 01/02 MY car ( which im assuming you have? ).. in which it has not yet occurred. or so i am told. but no doubt, your synchros are shot ( or shyte as it were! )
im not uk based but the remedy is the same on either side of the pond. a replacement of 1/2 gears and the synchros. GL w it. it's not a difficult repair, just relatively expensive.
i had my PPI done by the porsche dealership that sold me my previous 96t that was plagued with this issue.. won't do THAT again! so i feel your pain.
prices over here are all over the map. porsche wants 8k to R&R while a fair indie would want btw 4 ( min! ) to-5k+ depending on what all ( else ) might be needed. good time to take advantage of this misfortune, and upgrade your box if you're so inclined, and you track the car etc.

Thanks for the response it's a 03 ,what a pain. I spoke few people and must had read a dozen articles on the issue some have said that the detent can fix the problem and a reputable independent said the cars they had fitted the detent to no longer had the problem I'm hopeful...
Others have said as you have, prevention only.
I guess I should push for this to be done in warranty (rebuild) and not only detent.

wow, sucks. first time I've heard of it ever in an '03. perhaps it was a late 02 build date? as the shim tolerances were amended by porsche ( they'd heard enough of this issue by then! ) to change the gear stack placement with shims in cars beyond '02 MY ( or so i was told..).
in terms of any rebuild? re-shimming to the "amended" specs is of paramount importance.
porsche had to RE-DO their own rebuild as they initially rebuilt it to the OLD specs, and believe me when i say i had an enormous yet short-lived ( and ultimately successful ) battle with PCNA over that bit of subterfuge. they acted ( initially ) as if they'd never ever heard of the issue!
what type ( and from whom ) of warranty do you have? it must be aftermarket by now? but yes, push for it, and attempt ( as i did ) to lay blame at the selling dealership. this was back in 09 though, and i had the prescience to purchase their CPO warranty and pay the extra $3k!.. thankfully.
i'm re-living the nightmare as i type. holding the gearshift while downhill traversing lasted about two weeks and i was done %*&%%#%$@!!

15,000 quid! maybe but ONLY if a porsche dealership in bahrain does the work. 15k USD? is preposterous.
roger at https://californiamotorsports.net/co...ission-rebuild
will quote you a grand ( see link ) to open a g50 box and for your issue it's not gonna be more than another 4 grand in parts if replacing oem/stock.
but that's stateside.

However, a new ring and pinion, several bearings, a gear or two, synchros, R&R and maybe a clutch and PP while your at it will be ~$10k.
I had Brian Copans build it because his Porsche factory experience and knowledge are trusted by many and he wasn't any more expensive to work with.

sure for fully rebuilding a cup car and/or track ready box, ok i can see that.
but he asked about r&r for 2nd gear popout. i'd venture that if he pays more than say $6k in any denominated currencies - based upon my experience with both indies and porsche dealerships vis a vis transmission work - then he'd be paying too much.
also, the more choices/options available for repair shops, the better the prices tend to be. we are fortunate in that regard as to a few "choices", out here in SoCal.

wow. so i was quoted 8k by a dealership ( if was not to be covered by cpo warranty ) and that would've been a "deal". incredible.
i bet porsche only paid the dealer around 5$k, since they never pay "retail" to a dealer for warranty work.

Update:
Problem wasnt resolved so box needs needs to be removed again. Is there a catch all solution for this? Can someone describe so I can pass this on to the specialist? I heard it’s best to go with GT2 1 and 2 gears is that right? Many thanks!

if your modifying your car and do hard launches the 997 gt2 1-2 and 3 gearsets are a better way to go along with straight cut 456 gears. if your under 700 hp and rarely launch hard oem gearsets are fine. cost wise theres very little difference.
