Yes it can be done. Car graphic, ruf and fvd each offer one. I, personally have the fvd version which uses 200c hjs cats, only about 20% louder than stock. Sounds, runs amazing but not for everybody. MM does the internal mods for fvd, they make the Porsche gt3 rsr motorsports exhaust components for Porsche motorsports.

996t has 300 cell cat cores according to these guys:
