The 996 TT was available as the 2001-2005 here in the US with the X50 option available from 2002-2004 and then in 2005 it was standard as the 2005 Turbo S (no non-S available in '05).

Thanks , all clear now. I am looking to buy 996 turbo and bring it to Europe, to put it on local title cars from US certification needed for all cars made from 2001 and newer, Were hoping to find one 2000 in US
Why from US - have checked many ads in Germany HM the cars there slightly higher cost and much more km/miles done , think most of those due Germans love to ride on their Bahn roads , so 200 K miles + quite usual thing. And most of those done on high speed ...

Not sure if this would help but isn't it possible for some very early 2001 US cars to have been built in 2000? Perhaps someone knows for sure.

Now one difference I never hear discussed is that the only 996 that came with the second generation PCCB brakes was the S. That version was not available until 2005 and was the PCCB option for the 997 and 996 turboS. Porsche changed the PCCB design because of reports of some cracking on the first version. They increased the density of the fibers, doubled the internal ventilation and changed the pattern of the holes. You can tell second generation PCCB rotors by looking at the ring of vent openings around the rim.

a very short drive to drivin me crazy.. but i am still trying to figure out where i read the x50 cars were considered ( if not actually designated ) to be S cars in europe(?). but i've already conceded that assertion may well be mistaken...in fact it doesn't even make sense to me upon reflection lol
but whoever said that a primary marketing reason the "S" cars were actually offered in '05 was to clear the shelves of all the unused optionable and "unsold" 996turbo parts. think they had it at least partially right.
