Potential buy.... Advice needed!

Is sunroof a no cost option in the US? Why do most cars have them?
I see that many cars here in Europe have them too. Mine doesn't, specifically searched for one without. I even made my brother to order his M2 without that damn thing.
I've had cars with them but won't buy again!

I think sunroof was standard on turbo and you had to request that the car be built without one. Im assuming there was no charge for doing that.

Not sure how accurate this is but Piston Heads 996 buyers guide:
"A sunroof came as standard with all UK-supplied 996s, unless the owner deleted this as a no-cost option. Most buyers prefer the sunroof to be there, so be sure it works smoothly, quietly and quickly. Also have a look around the headlining for any evidence of leaks so you know if the seals need replacing."

So just to balance my comments above. The car drove well and has a stack of paperwork with lots of work done including mods. The prior owners seemed diligent I would only worry about the last 6 months or so that the shop guy had it.
If someone views it the story is all in the paperwork.
Exterior wise the car is pretty mint.
I had had a bad gut feel. But that was just my gut which means nothing really. But I wouldn't dismiss it. The dealer also seems like someone who would deal. I had considered before Xmas offering $37- $38k.

I went and looked at it today, and it wasn't for me. It has clearly been repainted as I can feel areas where debris are trapped under the paint and I can clearly make out DA sander marks under their shop lighting. I called them out on this and they agreeded with my suspicion. The paint job on the rear wing is crap, lots of miss fairs and uneven gaps. Interior not bad, some marks on the dash. They offered to vinyl wrap it for me. Beautiful car without the sunroof, it's a shame it's been refinished in such a poor manner. The expensive carbon fibre hood that's been painted looks very wavy on the surface and someone glued the emblem on Super crooked. I am a mechanic by trade and try to look at things for what they really are and seeing some of the careless work that's been done to this vehicle makes me seriously question how it's been treated and what it was worth to someone.

from my experience, the *better* mechanical cars often have some minor cosmetic flaws, but i also understand those getting into this kind of car not wanting to see any "flaws" upon purchase. but hey, 40k is.. only 40k.
good for you for at least putting eyes on it, and you know what to look for by trade. hell, i still say paint is paint, and the crooked emblem is just a perfect excuse to affix a gt2 sticker in its place. but i also need to remember that first time buyers are ( for the most part ) looking for garaged examples of rarely driven cars. for that, i'd go new or cpo lol.. but you know what would work for you, or not. gl in your continuing search.

Sounds like the car was a pretty serious track rat. It would be a great buy for someone who wants to continue that use.

This is the 1st one I have ever looked at, figured I should look at others before I settle. I will take everyone's comments into consideration, these all all good points.

I would add the first time 996tt buyer may tend to pass on cars that were tracked, and are looking for cars that are in near pristine condition just short of collector's value (as I was last year).
If I were in the market again, I'd probably be more inclined to find cars that WERE tracked, as these owners likely would have already spent $$ for upgrades like clutch, pinned coolant lines, turbos, etc...
As it stands this car is a great buy. I would just get an over rev report to make sure no recent type 2 over revs.
