Newbie needs clutch advice ASAP!
Hello all,
I'm ticking a box on the bucket list here and finally bought a 2004 TT Cab.
I've had a few Porsches over the years - 914-6 (wish I still had it!), 944,
couple 968's, and currently a Boxster S, but never a 911 til now.
I'm hoping the members can offer some advice regarding replacing the clutch.
I knew it needed replacing when I bought it, although it only has 35k miles on it.
After scouring the RL posts for hours I finally concluded that i'm going 1 of 2 ways - either total stock, or Sachs 2.5 kit, because it needs to be easy to drive regularly.
First question - pricing the Sachs kit the prices range from $12-1300 to 725 from EBS Racing. My mechanic is expressing concern that there there must be something amiss to have such a price discrepancy if it's a genuine part. Any of you all have thoughts on that, or experience with EBS. They certainly seem to be legitimate as far as I can tell. Does Sachs ever resell parts that may not be "up to standards"?
Second question - which package?
I'm 69, will never track the car, will drive it about 3k mi a year, and plan to own it at least 4 years. The car has only 2 mods - a Remus performance exhaust and a GAIC stage 2 tune. The tune, which will add about 80hp with appropriate torque increase is currently not installed. I can have the tune flashed in for $100. So the question is whether to spend and additional $500 to upgrade the clutch to handle the increased performance, OR go stock, chip it, and figure that with my driving characteristics will not roach the stock clutch. Make sense?
Would I regret not doing the upgrade from a resale point of view, i.e. would the performance clutch make the car significantly more desirable, and would it justify a higher selling price ($2-3000, or what?)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!
Drew

Always check Warehouse33auto.com for pricing. Take another 10% off their prices for using RENNLIST promo code. If it's cheaper than that, then it's too good to be true.

That same kit at warehouse33auto.com is $1,070, then minus 10% makes it $963 plus shipping. That's going to be as cheap as you'll find it.

the "upgrade" on the sachs is unnecessary given your power levels and goals/usage. though of course, it can't hurt. help on resale? doubtful and could even hurt, or shy away folks that don't know one "mod" from another. though, i've never known of anyone complaining about that
if you want to spend unnecessarily, then go for it. though the OEM sachs clutch is more than sufficient. you can also just add the gt2 unsprung disc which will take more bangin' around. but you don't need more than that.
i run the oem sachs with gt2 disc with hybrid turbos and most complementary bolt on's with a 1.3 tune and my last clutch lasted 100k miles and i drive fairly hard, just not on the clutch. the parts cost me $1K with the tougher disc.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-...Make%3APorsche
here's the difference:
Sachs Performance Clutch Pressure Plate - "Sport/Race" 764
Sachs Clutch Disc "Sport" Rigid Hub with Organic Lining 098
Sachs Release Bearing 08
ADD! I also had a 914/6! classic!... until it self immolated while at a stoplight! ACK

This is a good time to post about my coming Spring Clutch kit Special..
Ultimate Motorwerks Sachs 764 Race Engineering Dual mass clutch kit Special $1,595.00
And for those that want the factory STOCK clutch kit $950.00
Sachs/Porsche stock pressure plate, sprung Sachs clutch disk and Throw out bearing
If you want the STOCK clutch kit WITH/GT2 clutch disk similar to 02996TTx50 recommends the cost is $965.00
It is my opinion that one should consider using the 764 Sachs Race kit, IF you track your car or if you have a higher output tune/turbochargers.

Thanks all for the input - going with the stock set-up. It will be great to finally be able to drive the car to its capability - haven't driven a Turbo before!

at the risk of being obvious, you wont find a better deal than what kevin/umw here has just offered. mechanics generally don't appreciate bringing your own parts and they won't "warranty" them, but the good ones will let ya.
i'd be carrying the oem kit under my arm if *they*? won't match 950 lol. anyway, you're making a prudent and cost effective choice in my view and oem/stock.. what can go wrong lol. don't forget to go really easy on it for a few hundred miles, then it could well outlive us both hah!

Update: Ordered the clutch kit from Jon at EBS Racing after a phone conversation - kit will be delivered today and I will post photos and commentary once I have it in hand. BTW Jon was able to substitute the GT2 disc for the stock disc at the same price.
