Default Exhaust Swap

Hello. I recently purchased a 2002 Turbo that came with a Kline 3" catless exhaust. Looking to put the stock exhaust back on to pass inspection (I have the exhaust). What is the difficulty level of reinstalling the stock exhaust? Does the bumper need to come off?

Thanks

bumper needn't be removed to r&r exhaust.. and if you got some 200 cats for that kline you'd pass smog. i have the kline with 200 cats and it passes and they also have decat pipes you can get from sambo

IMHO, the best way is to remove the bumper and IC's, extra 10mins of work to save you an hour of time, make life easy...
6tt I have on the hoist right now has a Kline, nice exhaust

Thanks. Is the job basically straight forward? Anything that I should know before I start?

I'd just ad a set of Kline 200 c cats, will pass easily.
Not necessary to remove bumper and ic but helps.

From what I recall, the Kline 3" only comes with 100 cell cats....or de-cats, so putting the stock exhaust back on is probably a good call, esp. if your state (NJ) is as strict as CA.

As previously noted, check with Sambo...he'll have the answer.

I think I paid my shop for 3 hours to install the Kline, it wasn't a big project. Bumper stayed on and they replaced some fancy/expensive exhaust gasket o-rings.

Never done it with the bumper or anything else removed, maybe its easier, but I didn't have any issues. Just expect to find some seized bolts and studs while you're in there.

Hey guys. Here to help if I can. Feel free to reach out. Getting the Kline out will be a piece of cake it's getting the factory one back in that can break your back but I have some tricks I can help you with. The metal rings that seal the exhaust are actually like a compression C ring. They are reusable and really good quality stainless steel.

I did this as my first DIY. Very easy. Took me about 3 hrs working by myself and slowly. I did not remove the bumper or ICs, but agree with others that this would make things a bit easier - access is actually pretty decent without removal.

There are a lot of DIY's out there. I don't recall the one I followed.
Some notes:
  • I suggest taking a good look at the stud bolts holding the exhaust to the turbos - if they are rusty, plan for extra pain (I was lucky, mine were easy to remove.) Hit them with liquid wrench or similar a few times for a few days – if these break, I’ve heard it’s a PITA to get them out.
  • Disconnect the O2 sensors at the harness, remove exhaust with them attached - don’t try to remove them from the exhaust before removing the exhaust from the car.
  • Support the exhaust when you remove the straps that hold it at the rear of the car.
  • The stock exhaust is quite heavy compared to some of the aftermarket ones – having someone to help maneuver it in place is a good idea

Thanks for the tips. I believe the exhaust has only been on a short period so hopefully bolts come off easily.

May put the Kline back on at some point. Would the 100 cell cats pass NJ emissions?

you don't need to remove the bumper or IC's, but they make life easy and the job faster
